‘Duel to the Death’ Blu-ray Review (88 Films)
Stars: Norman Chu, Damian Lau, Flora Chong-Leen | Directed by Ching Siu-tung

Ching Siu-tung is best known for directing the classic A Chinese Ghost Story, but a few years earlier he helmed what would go on to become one of the most celebrated martial arts films of the 1980s. Released in 1983, Duel to the Death has since earned a reputation as an action classic, renowned for its blend of stylised swordplay, fantasy elements and inventive choreography that helped define the era.
Over the past few years, 88 Films has built an impressive catalogue of classic Asian cinema on Blu-ray, giving many fan-favourite titles the high-quality releases they deserve. Now the label turns its attention to Duel to the Death, delivering a superb deluxe Blu-ray edition that should prove essential for kung fu and martial arts film fans alike.
Every ten years, a duel is held between the finest Japanese and Chinese martial artists to determine whose Swordmanship is superior. During the Ming Dynasty, as the next duel approaches, the chosen candidates are caught in the middle of a battle between Ninjas and Shaolin monks. Only a Duel to the Death will settle the countries’ conflicts and stop the bloodshed.
Duel to the Death is a true visual spectacle, packed with inventive effects and some of the most dynamic action choreography of its era. The fight sequences are consistently impressive, blending wirework, swordplay and fantasy elements in a way that keeps the film feeling fresh even decades later, while the performances fully commit to the heightened, almost mythic tone of the story.
What really helps the film stand out, however, is the simplicity of its premise. The straightforward rivalry at the heart of the story makes it easy to follow, allowing the action and visuals to take centre stage without unnecessary complications. The result is a fast-paced, action-packed martial arts classic that rarely slows down and remains hugely entertaining from start to finish.
88 Films have released Duel to the Death on Blu-ray in 1080p, presented in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio. There are two audio tracks to choose from. First, there is the original Cantonese track with newly translated English subtitles or the English dub option. The English dub I truly enjoy! 88 Films has restored this kung fu classic in 2K from the original negative, and what results is a very nice-looking picture with no digital artefacts or audio anomalies. In addition to a wonderful new restoration, 88 Films adds some cool bonus features as well, including:
Bonus Materials:
- Audio Commentary with Asian Cinema Expert Frank Djeng
- Duel Identity – Archival interview with actor Norman Chui Siu-keung
- Flora Cheung on Duel to the Death – Archival interview with actress Flora Cheung
- Alternate English credits
- Image Gallery
- Original Hong Kong Trailer
- Reconstructed Tai Seng Trailer
- Reversible Sleeve
- Booklet Insert entitled “When Bushido is pitted against Kung Fu, it has to be Duel to the Death”
- O-Ring Slip Case with New Artwork by Kung Fu Bob
Frank Djeng once again does an excellent job of taking viewers behind the scenes of classic Asian cinema, delivering an informative and engaging look at the film’s production and its place within the genre. The additional interview features are equally worthwhile, offering further insight that fans of Hong Kong cinema will definitely appreciate, while the included booklet is a thoroughly enjoyable read packed with interesting background and context.
Before even getting to the disc, however, it’s the presentation that immediately stands out. The artwork in particular is where this release really shines, with 88 Films delivering a beautifully designed package that feels every bit as premium as the film deserves.
