‘Friday Night Smackdown’ Review (Jan 19th 2024)

by Phil Wheat

Welcome to this review of this past Friday’s episode of Friday Night Smackdown, right here on Nerdly. Let’s see what went down on this week’s episode!

Match #1: Santos Escobar, Angel & Humberto def. The LWO

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Although Carlito hit the Backstabber on Humberto in the height of their explosive Six-Man Tag Team Match, his failure to realize that Santos Escobar had tagged himself opened the door for his adversary to pick up the quick pinfall.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #2: Pete Dunne and Tyler Bate def. Pretty Deadly

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

In a surprise SmackDown moment, the tough-as-nails Pete Dunne returned to team with Tyler Bate against Elton Prince and Kit Wilson. In the final moments, The Big Strong Boi leaped over the top rope to take out Wilson at ringside and set up The BruiserWeight to score the huge victory over Prince with the Bitter End.

My Score: 3 out of 5

Match #3: WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship – Kayden Carter & Katana Chance def. Alba Fyre & Isla Dawn

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Katana Chance and Kayden Carter successfully defended their WWE Women’s Tag Team Titles over Alba Fyre and Isla Dawn with the Keg Stand. After the bell, however, The Kabuki Warriors stepped into the ring, and it wasn’t long before the titleholders accepted a challenge from the dangerous Damage CTRL Superstars.

My Score: 2 out of 5

Match #4: LA Knight vs. AJ Styles (No-Contest)

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

After a distraction by Jimmy Uso, Solo Sikoa unleashed a sneak attack on LA Knight and AJ Styles in which “The Tribal Heir” delivered a Samoan Spike to two of Roman Reigns’ Royal Rumble challengers.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #5: Randy Orton def. Solo Sikoa

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

In the final moments of a turbulent main event, a disruption between Jimmy Uso, LA Knight and AJ Styles outside the ring caused Solo Sikoa to make the crucial mistake of turning his back on The Viper. Without warning, WWE’s Apex Preador hit the RKO that gave him a monumental win en route to the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship Fatal 4-Way Match at Royal Rumble.

My Score: 2 out of 5

Final Verdict: 2.5/5

An average episode of Smackdown in terms of wrestling action – though the tag match with “Pete Dunne” making his return from stupid gimmick identity was a great match – but the promos and talking heads segments really helped this one from boredom. I’m really loving Nick Aldis’ authority figure work right now, ruling with an iron fist and standing up to Paul Heyman and Roman Reigns and their shenanigans is a LOT of fun! Easily the highlight of Smackdown in recent weeks.
