For those unfamiliar with the series, The Filmmakers Podcast is a podcast about how to make films from micro-budget indie films to bigger-budget studio films and everything in between. Our hosts Giles Alderson, Dom Lenoir, Dan Richardson, Andrew Rodger and Cristian James talk about how to get films made, how to actually make them and how to try not to f… it up in their very humble opinion. Guests will come on and chat about their filmmaking experiences from directors, writers, producers and screenwriters, to actors, cinematographers and distributors.

The Filmmaker’s Podcast #377: J. A. Bayona – Society of the Snow, The Orphanage and The Impossible director on planning and shooting feature films

This weeks guest is J. A. Bayona the director of Society of the Snow, Netflix’s new smash hit movie. He is also the director of The Orphanage, A Monster Calls, The Impossible, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and the TV series Rings of Power. J.A sits down with fellow director Giles Alderson to discuss Society of the Snow and making disaster films. Creating huge set pieces and THAT plane crash. He talks planning and shooting in the snow and cold, creating tension, story boarding, animatics and actors creativity. Plus:

  • Shooting chronologically and not cutting.
  • Why he wants his actors to take risks.
  • How has he changed as a director since he made his debut movie The Orphanage.
  • What is the biggest hurdle he over came and what it means to be a director.

Society of the Snow is out now on Netflix
