‘WWE NXT’ Review (Jan 23rd 2024)

by Phil Wheat

Welcome to this week’s review of NXT, right here on Nerdly. Let’s get straight into it and see what went down in this episode…

Match #1: Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic – Bron Breakker and Baron Corbin def. Axiom and Nathan Frazer

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Bron Breakker and Baron Corbin punched their ticket to NXT Vengeance Day with a resounding victory over Axiom and Nathan Frazer in the Semifinals of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. The speed of Axiom and Frazer was on full display early, but the “Wolf Dogs” as Breakker likes to call themselves weathered the storm and used their power to gain the advantage. After an incredible back and forth between both teams, Corbin hit Axiom with an End of Days with Breakker following that up with a bone-shattering Spear on Frazer, securing their victory.

My Score: 3.5 out of 5

Match #2: Lash Legend def. Wren Sinclair

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

The Meta-Four’s Lash Legend spoiled the exciting singles debut of Wren Sinclair by dispatching the upstart rookie after their confrontation during last week’s No. 1 Contender Battle Royal. Sinclair was more than game, but Legend was too big and too strong, ultimately earning the win with a chokeslam/powerbomb combo. After the match, The Meta-Four circled the helpless Sinclair when suddenly Fallon Henley arrived onto the scene to help the rookie.

My Score: 0 out of 5

Match #3: Lexis King def. Trey Bearhill

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

The brash Lexis King is back to his winning ways after defeating his rival Trey Bearhill in singles action. King was impressive throughout the match, finishing off the bigger Bearhill with The Coronation.

My Score: 1 out of 5

Match #4: Dragon Lee def. SCRYPTS

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Former NXT North American Champion Dragon Lee is on a quest to reclaim his title and the first step was a major victory over SCRYPTS. With Bronco Nima, Lucien Price, and Jaida Parker in his corner, SCRYPTS used his athletic offense and brought the fight, but Lee was on a mission to send a message. Out of nowhere, The Family arrived and while seeking revenge on OTM, Lee took advantage of the chaos and planted SCRYPTS in the middle of the ring.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #5: Blair Davenport def. Karmen Petrovic

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

The 2023 Women’s Iron Survivor, Blair Davenport, solidified herself as a force in NXT as she defeated Karmen Petrovic in a back-and-forth match. Davenport utilized vicious offensive maneuvers, including a double stomp from the top rope to the back of the neck of her opponent. Despite a fight from Petrovic, Davenport used her devastating knee strike to continue her winning streak in singles action.

My Score: 2 out of 5

Match #6: Trick Williams def. Josh Briggs

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Before challenging Ilja Dragunov for the NXT Championship at Vengeance Day, Trick Williams took down Josh Briggs in a matchup of two of NXT’s fastest rising stars. Briggs has been looking to prove himself since breaking off from Fallon Henley and Brooks Jensen, but his signature win will have to wait. Williams’ best friend, Carmelo Hayes, appeared at ringside to get in a shot at The Mad Dragon as Williams rolled up Briggs for the win inside the ring.

My Score: 3 out of 5

Final Verdict: 2.5/5

What a comedown this week’s NXT was compared to last week’s show! Only the opening Dusty Classic tag match and the main event are worth anyone’s viewing time. It felt like this show was more interested in putting on promos to create and plug stories/matches that are coming up on the brand’s Vengeance Day PLE rather than putting together a cohesive WRESTLING show. Ah well, maybe next week will get NXT back on track.
