‘AEW: Battle of the Belts 6’ Review

by Phil Wheat

We’ve got a bonus show from AEW this week, the sixth installment of the quarterly Battle of the Belts, which followed directly from this week’s episode of Rampage this past Friday on TNT. Let’s get to it!

Match #1: AEW International Championship Match – Orange Cassidy def. Dralistico

The following is courtesy of allelitewrestling.com:

Dralistico drilled Orange with a knee strike and then a step-up hurracanrana. Orange dropkicked Dralistico, both hands in his pockets. Dralistico flew out of the ring and landed on top of the Best Friends. LFI and Best Friends brawled up the ramp and to the back. Orange rocked Dralistico with a spinning DDT. Dralistico fired back with a Code Breaker on Cassidy for a near fall. Orange rallied back with a Stun Dog Millionaire. Dralistico used a springboard hurracanrana on Orange and then worked on Cassidy’s arm. Countering the Beach Break, Dralistico walloped Orange with a Canadian Destroyer. Cassidy came back with the Orange Punch, right on target, and pinned Dralistico!

My Score: 3 out of 5

Match #2: TBS Championship Match – Jade Cargill def. Billie Starkz

The following is courtesy of allelitewrestling.com:

Starkz slapped Jade in the face to start the match. Jade Cargill had no time for that and hit a stiff knee shot to Billie’s ribs. Jade used a fallaway slam on Starkz. Billie dodged a kick from Jade. Billie countered Jaded with a hurracanrana. Billie caught Jade with another kick and then rolled up Jade for a two-count. Starkz nailed Jade with a flatliner! Starkz attempted a senton but Jade got her knees up to counter. Jade rocked Billie with a pump kick and then flattened her with Jaded for the pin!

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #3: ROH World Tag Team Championship Match – The Lucha Brothers (Penta El Zero Miedo & Rey Fenix) def. Powerhouse Hobbs & QT Marshall

The following is courtesy of allelitewrestling.com:

ROH’s Caprice Coleman joined the broadcast booth for this match. QT Marshall shoved Penta El Zero Miedo away, but then QT got a slap for his efforts. Hobbs tagged in and Hobbs ate several thrust kicks from Penta El Zero Miedo. Rey Fenix tagged in and quickly flew outside with a tope to QT! Fenix jumped back into the ring but Powerhouse Hobbs neutralized the attack. Hobbs and Marshall rammed into Penta El Zero Miedo with stereo shoulder blocks. Penta El Zero Miedo hit the sling blade on QT, and then took Hobbs down with the backstabber. Rey Fenix tagged in and scored a rana on QT. Penta drilled QT with a DDT. Rey Fenix cracked Hobbs with a corkscrew kick. Hobbs charged at Rey Fenix and threw his body at him. QT rocked Rey Fenix with a cutter. Rey Fenix and Penta El Zero Miedo were using rapid fire offense, kicking Hobbs from every direction. The Lucha Brothers were plowed through by Hobbs with lariats. Rey Fenix came back with a spinning kick on QT. The QTV crew ganged up on Alex Abrahantes at ringside. Hobbs powerbombed Penta on the apron. Rey Fenix countered and then rolled up QT Marshall for the pin!

My Score: 3.5 out of 5

Final Verdict: 3/5

There’s one HUGE issue with all of AEW’s Battle of the Belts shows… You know absolutely none of the titles being fought for will change hands! It’s become something of a huge flaw in this quarterly show and one that, ultimately, detracts from the in-ring action and makes everything you watch during Battle of the Belts totally irrelevant in terms of impact on the company and its storylines. Still, we get to watch more good wrestling from AEW, so it’s not all bad.
