‘WWE Smackdown’ Review (Jan 24th 2025)

by Phil Wheat

Welcome to this review of this past Friday’s episode of Smackdown, right here on Nerdly. Let’s see what went down on this week’s show!

Match #1: Motor City Machine Guns def. Pretty Deadly

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Despite an aggressive effort by Elton Prince and Kit Wilson, Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin hit Skull and Bones to emerge victorious in an explosive tag team showdown.

My Score: 3 out of 5

Match #2: Michin & B-Fab def. Chelsea Green & Piper Niven

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Michin hit Eat Defeat on the Women’s United States Champion to give herself and B-Fab the tag team win over Chelsea Green and Piper Niven.

My Score: 2 out of 5

Match #3: Liv Morgan, Nia Jax & Candice LeRae def. Rhea Ripley, Bianca Belair & Naomi

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

In a chaotic conclusion to a Six-Woman Tag Team Match, Bianca Belair hit Candice LeRae with the K.O.D., only for legal competitor Liv Morgan to roll up The EST of WWE for the victory.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #4: Apollo Crews def. Johnny Gargano

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

When Tommaso Ciampa attacked Apollo Crews outside the ring as the official’s back was turned, Motor City Machine Guns emerged. The sudden distraction by the former WWE Tag Team Champions paved the way for Crews to pick up a rollup pin against Johnny Gargano.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #5: LA Knight def. Tama Tonga

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Moments after LA Knight defeated Tama Tonga with B.F.T, Jacob Fatu unleashed a post-match attack. His assault was brought to to a sudden stop, though, by the emergence of Braun Strowman. The Monster of All Monsters knocked The Samoan Werewolf out of the ring and stood tall prior to battling Fatu at Saturday Night’s Main Event.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #6: Damian Priest def. Carmelo Hayes

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Shortly after stepping through the transfer portal to become a member of the SmackDown roster, Damian Priest took down Carmelo Hayes with South of Heaven.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #7: Kevin Owens def. Jimmy Uso

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Moments after Kevin Owens overcame Jimmy Uso with the Pop-up Powerbomb in an explosive main event, Owens attempted to smash Uso through the announce table. However, Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes charged the ring and got into a wild brawl with his bitter enemy. What effect will the bedlam have on their Royal Rumble Ladder Match contract signing on Saturday Night’s Main Event?

My Score: 3 out of 5

Final Verdict: 2.5/5

Oof. This felt like a drop off for Smackdown, even against last week’s show – and that one only had two good matches!Like the majority of the previous episode, this was a mundane, middle-of-the-road show with nothing much to get excited about or care about. And a show that TOTALLY wasted good talent on bad matches. The only plus? They did a lot of selling for Saturday Night Main Event the following night!
