‘WWE NXT’ Review (Jan 21st 2025)

by Phil Wheat

Welcome to this week’s review of NXT, right here on Nerdly. Let’s get straight into it and see what went down on this week’s show!

Match #1: NXT North American Championship – Tony D’Angelo def. Ridge Holland

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

The Family still holds gold as Tony D’Angelo retained the NXT North American Championship thanks to an unlikely assist from Izzi Dame. Shawn Spears, Brooks Jensen and Niko Vance hit the scene and brawled with Channing ‘Stacks’ Lorenzo and Luca Crusifino, destracting the official long enough for Dame to crack Holland with a huge Big Boot. The Don won the bout and in his confusion turned to Dame who told him that they “were even”.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #2: Wes Lee def. Dion Lennox

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Wes Lee was given all he could handle by Dion Lennox but in the end, one Cardiac Kick was enough for Lee to win the bout. After the match, Lee called out Trick Williams and the former NXT Champion obliged by instigating a physical confrontation.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #3: NXT Heritage Cup – Lexis King def. Charlie Dempsey

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Lexis King once again proved that he is worthy of the NXT Heritage Cup as he defeated former champion Charlie Dempsey in controversial fashion. King scored the first fall thanks to a heads-up move where he trapped Dempsey underneath him and grabbed his leg long enough for the pinfall. Dempsey evened things up with a Double Underhook suplex to set up the all important sudden death. The two Superstars incidentally trapped the official in the corner and with them not looking, King intentionally hit Dempsey below the belt and hit the Coronation to win the match.

My Score: 3 out of 5

Match #4: Karmen Petrovic def. Jaida Parker

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Alongside Ashante Thee Adonis, Karmen Petrovic scored a huge win when she defeated Jaida Parker, even if she got some help from Kelani Jordan. Parker and Petrovic engaged in fierce back and forth battle, but Jordan appeared and got in Parker’s face, allowing Petrovic to roll her up and get the win.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #5: Brooks Jensen & Niko Vance def. The Family

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Shawn Spears’ young proteges Brooks Jensen and Niko Vance stunned The D’Angelo Family when they defeated Channing ‘Stacks’ Lorenzo and Luca Crusifino in tag team action. The imposing Vance impressed in his in-ring debut, smashing The Consigliere into the steel steps which left Stacks all on his own. Vance followed that with a huge running lariat that delivered the win for his team.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #6: NXT Championship – Oba Femi def. Eddy Thorpe

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

The Ruler of NXT reaffirmed his status as the best as Oba Femi defeated Eddy Thorpe to remain NXT Champion. Midway through the battle, Austin Theory and Grayson Waller appeared on the perch to watch the matchup and it caught the eye of both Superstars. Thorpe gave it all he had, but the strength advantage of the champion was too much to overcome as one Fall From Grace gave Femi the win.

My Score: 3 out of 5

Final Verdict: 2.5/5

Another solid, if unremarkable, episode of NXT this week. It’s just a shame that there was nothing truly exciting on this show, though we at least got two good matches in the Heritage Cup match and the main event title match. Just a shame that other title matches on the card couldn’t compete. If you watched Raw this week, this was a HUGE comedown!
