‘WWE NXT’ Review (Jun 25th 2024)

by Phil Wheat

Welcome to this week’s review of NXT, right here on Nerdly. Let’s get straight into it and see what went down in this episode…

Match #1: Tag Team Turmoil – Winners: Chase U

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Malik Blade and Edris Enofé kicked off the match against New Catch Republic, but Tyler Bate and Pete Dunne used their athleticism against them as Dunne took Blade out before the team hit a joint powerbomb to secure the fall. Legado del Fantasma’s Angel and Berto were next into the match, and it led to more high octane-offense, culminating in Apollo Crews appearing and costing Legado the win. Bate and Dunne continued only to run into Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson, but a rollup by Dunne caught Anderson off-guard. Chase U became the final team to enter, and Andre Chase and Duke Hudson capitalized on their freshness as they knocked off New Catch Republic with a timely assist from Ridge Holland.

My Score: 3.5 out of 5

Match #2: Wes Lee def. Joe Coffey

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Wes Lee is primed and ready for a championship opportunity and earned it by defeating Joe Coffey. Despite Gallus trying to interfere, Lee overcame it and a All the Best for the Bells lariat by hitting a Cardiac Kick and winning the bout. After the match, Oba Femi appeared and granted Lee an opportunity at the NXT North American Title at Heatwave.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #3: NXT Heritage Cup Championship – Tony D’Angelo def. Nathan Frazer

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

The Heritage Cup remains with Tony D’Angelo but not before a battle with former cup holder Nathan Frazer. The first fall came in a flash as Frazer used his speed to score a rollup. The second fall went to D’Angelo after a thunderous powerbomb, tying it up at one fall apiece. Rounds three, four and five came and went without a fall, despite both Superstars nearly having won, including a big Phoenix splash from Frazer at the end of Round 5. After a flurry from Frazer, The Don rallied and battled through multiple ailments to hit one final spinebuster and retain the Heritage Cup.

My Score: 3.5 out of 5

Match #4: Roxanne Perez def. Karmen Petrovic

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

With Lola Vice watching on commentary, NXT Women’s Champion Roxanne Perez dominated Karmen Petrovic inside the ring to the tune of a statement victory. Petrovic fought valiantly and used her martial arts background to stay in the fight, but it wasn’t enough as one Pop Rox allowed the champion to win. After the match, Vice knocked Perez out cold and took the NXT Women’s Title with her.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #5: Tavion Heights def. Damon Kemp

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Tavion Heights is now officially a member of No Quarter Catch Crew after defeating Damon Kemp. Heights shined early and even forced Kemp to pop his shoulder back into place on the outside. Channeling fellow former Olympian and WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle, Heights used an Angle Slam, and it all impressed Charlie Dempsey. Heights landed a running belly-to-belly suplex for the win to secure his place in No Quarter Catch Crew, much to the dismay of Kemp.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #6: Sol Ruca def. Arianna Grace

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Sol Ruca will challenge Kelani Jordan for the NXT Women’s North American Championship after defeating Arianna Grace. Grace was out to prove that she should already be champion, but Ruca had other ideas and used her as her own personal surfboard. After an intense back-and-forth left Grace stunned, Ruca scaled the ropes and hit a Sol Snatcher to punch her ticket to Heatwave.

My Score: 2 out of 5

Match #7: Shawn Spears def. Trick Williams

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Shawn Spears inserted himself into the NXT Title picture in a major way as he knocked off Trick Williams in a non-title match. Spears incurred the wrath of the champion, and he looked to be in deep trouble after Williams absorbed every blow from his opponent. Out of nowhere, a crazed fan tried to enter the ring and accidentally hit Williams with a piece of the announce table, which allowed Spears to connect with C4 and win the match in stunning fashion.

My Score: 3 out of 5

Final Verdict: 3.5/5

A very good week for NXT, seemingly building on the momentum of last week’s good show and delivering – apart from on rather sloppy match – solid work from everyone across the board. Once again the Heritage Cup match was one of the highlights of the show which, honestly, is not something I’d still be expecting to say with Tony D’Angelo as the title holder (kudos to him for holding it down in the role). The opening tag match was a great example of the tag team turmoil format; whilst the main event saw Spears pick up the win, driving the story towards Heatwave rather than giving us the expected Trick Williams win. Overall a great week’s watch.
