‘WWE NXT’ Review (Feb 20th 2024)

by Phil Wheat

Welcome to this week’s review of NXT, right here on Nerdly. Let’s get straight into it and see what went down in this episode…

Match #1: Oba Femi def. Lexis King

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Oba Femi claims to be blessed by destiny and after another dominant performance, this time against Lexis King, there could be no stopping the Nigerian Superstar. Femi used his incredible blend of explosiveness and strength to keep King off-balance for nearly the whole match, but it was King’s past that came back to haunt him. Mr. Stone walked down the ramp and yelled at King, causing the challenger to leave the ring and shove him, but that left him wide open for more clubbing blows and ultimately a pop-up powerbomb.

My Score: 2 out of 5

Match #2: Roxanne Perez def. Wren Sinclair

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

The new demeanor of Roxanne Perez is paying dividends as she continues to rack up victories, this time over the newcomer Wren Sinclair. Sinclair put up an incredible fight but in the end, she couldn’t take down The Prodigy and secure her first statement victory in NXT. In the end, Perez hit a thunderous Pop Rox but rolled through and locked in a submission, forcing Sinclair to tap out.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #3: Josh Briggs def. Brooks Jensen

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Former friends and tag team partners battled each other for the first time and in the end, only Briggs was left standing. Jensen has started to show more fight in recent weeks, but he wasn’t ready for it to translate in the ring as Briggs’ bruising offense was too much to overcome. With Jensen left woozy, Briggs nailed a lariat, pulled his former partner up, told him he loved him, and hit another lariat to secure the emotional victory.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #4: Jacy Jayne def. Arianna Grace

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

The women of Chase U are on a roll and it continued as Jacy Jayne scored a big victory over Arianna Grace while Thea Hail and Jazmyn Nix watched at ringside. Jayne showed a little frustration with Hail after she refused to attack Grace, but despite the beauty queen’s major rally, Jayne managed to right the ship. Given the same opportunity as Hail, Nix slugged Grace and threw her back into the ring, allowing Jayne to pick up the victory, icing out Hail in the postmatch celebration.

My Score: 2 out of 5

Match #5: Chase U def. Nathan Frazer & Axiom

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Bron Breakker and Baron Corbin need No. 1 Contenders to their newly won NXT Tag Team Titles, and the honor is now Chase U’s as Duke Hudson and Andre Chase defeated Nathan Frazer and Axiom. Hudson’s power clashed with the speed of both Frazer and Axiom, leading to an incredible back-and-forth between the amazing Superstars. After Hudson battled back from a two-on-one attack, Chase tagged into the match and managed to catch Frazer in a roll-up to earn the win. After the match, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson appeared and leveled all three members of Chase U as well as Frazer and Axion, sending a message to the entire NXT Tag Team division.

My Score: 3 out of 5

Match #6: Lash Legend def. Kelani Jordan

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

The future was on full display as Kelani Jordan battled Lash Legend, but it was The Boujee Bully who walked away with a huge victory. Jordan seemed to be in a good position to hit a high-flying maneuver, but Jakara Jackson distracted her long enough to allow Legend to hit a massive choke slam to win the bout. After the match, Kiana James and Izzi Dame tried to attack a downed Jordan, but she managed to escape their grasp and infuriate the devious duo.

My Score: 2 out of 5

Match #7: NXT Women’s Championship – Lyra Valkyria def. Shotzi and Lash Legend

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

The NXT Women’s Championship remains with Lyra Valkyria after defending her title not once, but twice against both Shotzi and Lash Legend. Shotzi was in firm control of the math but despite her impressive performance, she suffered an injury that forced her out of the match. Ava made her way down to the ringside and announced that an Open Challenge would decide Valkyria’s new challenger, and it was none other than the Boujee Bully. The resilient Valkyria was able to readjust her gameplan and systematically take down Legend, culminating in a huge splash off the top rope to retain her title.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Final Verdict: 2.5/5

Oof… this was yet another disappointing episode of NXT. It’s starting to feel like there’s a lack of direction within the black and gold brand, with feuds playing out far, far too long and a lot of random matches that feel like they SHOULD have a tight storyline to accompany them but instead feel more like playground arguments. Unfortunately, this week’s show didn’t have any “big” named NXT stars to give the show a boost – with only the No.1 Contenders tag match delivering any sort of real wrestling excitement. That’s two weeks in a row now that NXT has faltered…
