‘WWE NXT’ Review (Jan 9th 2024)
Welcome to this week’s review of NXT, right here on Nerdly. Let’s get straight into it and see what went down in this episode…
Match #1: Blair Davenport def. Nikkita Lyons
The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
Despite months of anticipation and pent-up frustration, Nikkita Lyons couldn’t exact payback on the Superstar that injured her, Blair Davenport. The two rivals brawled before the match even began, and the action continued once the bell rang as both Superstars pummeled each other. Lyons was determined, but Davenport kept attacking her previously injured knee, with a chop block and a vicious knee strike securing her victory.
My Score: 2.5 out of 5
Match #2: Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic – Bron Breakker & Baron Corbin def. Gallus
The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
The team of Bron Breakker and Baron Corbin is off to a good start as they knocked off Gallus in the opening round of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. Wolfgang and Mark Coffey were their usual brutish selves, but the pair of Breakker and Corbin matched every bit of physicality and intensity that Gallus brought. In the waning moments, Breakker and Corbin weren’t on the same page to see who would score the pinfall, but nonetheless, the duo advanced to the next round.
My Score: 3 out of 5
Match #3: Josh Briggs def. Oro Mensah
The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
The newly solo Josh Briggs has his eyes set on the NXT Heritage Cup and he sent a message to Noam Dar by defeating his “Main Man”, Oro Mensah. The Meta-Four tried their usual shenanigans, but Briggs was too determined and managed to hit a devastating clothesline to earn the win.
My Score: 2.5 out of 5
Match #4: NXT Tag Team Championship – The Family def. OTM
The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
The NXT Tag Team Titles remain with The Family as Tony D’Angelo and Channing “Stacks” Lorenzo overcame the dangerous duo of Bronco Nima and Lucien Price, known collectively as OTM. The massive team of Nima and Price posed a serious threat to the champions, bashing them with their hard-hitting strikes and powerful offense. However, SCRYPTS tried to get involved but he was thwarted by Adriana Rizzo, allowing her teammates to successfully retain their titles amidst the chaos.
My Score: 3 out of 5
Match #5: Cora Jade def. Gigi Dolin
The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
Cora Jade continues to wreak havoc on the NXT women’s division as she impressively dispatched Gigi Dolin. Dolin put up a fight, but Jade has taken her game to a different level since returning and put away the fiery redhead with a ring-shaking Butterfly DDT.
My Score: 2.5 out of 5
Match #6: Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic – Axiom & Nathan Frazer def. Hank Walker & Tank Ledger
The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
The team of Nathan Frazer and Axiom looked like a dynamic duo as they advanced to the next round of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic after defeating Hank Walker and Tank Ledger. Hank and Tank tried to use their power but the speed and athleticism of Frazer and Axiom was too much to overcome as an amazing 450 splash secured the win.
My Score: 3 out of 5
Match #7: NXT North American Championship – Dragon Lee def. Lexis King
The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
Dragon Lee retained the NXT North American Championship in thrilling fashion as he defeated Lexis King after a grueling back and forth matchup. King was willing to do whatever it took to dethrone Lee, but one twisting slam from the champion put away the brash newcomer for the three count.
My Score: 3 out of 5
Match #8: NXT North American Championship – Oba Femi def. Dragon Lee (Cash-In)
The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
The landscape of NXT has officially changed as Oba Femi cashed in his guaranteed championship match contract on Dragon Lee to become the new NXT North American Champion. Lee had just successfully defended the title against Lexis King, but the gigantic Femi appeared, cashed in, and smashed Lee to win the title and usher in a new era.
My Score: 0 out of 5
Final Verdict: 3/5
You’ve got to appreciate ANY episode of WWE programming that includes so many matches – even more so when it’s only a 2-hour show! As usual the Tag Team Classic matches delivered, as did the tag team title match. The real shocker of the night was that main event… Dragon Lee retains and then loses the title to a cash-in? What is this, the main roster?!
