Friday Night Smackdown – Sept 29th 2023: Results & Review

by Phil Wheat

Welcome to this review of this past Friday’s episode of Friday Night Smackdown, right here on Nerdly. Let’s see what went down on this week’s episode!

Match #1: Jimmy Uso def. Karl Anderson

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

In a subsequent matchup, a Solo Sikoa distraction allowed Jimmy Uso to rake Anderson’s eyes before following up with a Superkick and Samoan Splash to overcame his opponent. When Anderson battled back after the match, Solo entered the ring and blasted the defeated Superstar with a post-match Samoan Spike. As The Bloodline made the exit, however, Michin emerged and dropped Jimmy to the floor with a hard slap.

My Score: 1.5 out of 5

Match #2: Austin Theory def. Cameron Grimes

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

In the height of the action, Austin Theory utilized a distraction by Grayson Waller to throw a very game Cameron Grimes into the ring post before finishing off his opponent with A-Town Down.

My Score: 1.5 out of 5

Match #3: United States Championship – Rey Mysterio def. Santos Escobar

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

In an extremely gruelling showdown between LWO cohorts, Rey Mysterio countered Santos Escobar’s Phantom Driver to pick up the quick pin and successfully defeat his United States Championship.

My Score: 3.5 out of 5

Match #4: Charlotte Flair def. Bayley

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

In the final moments of an explosive matchup, Charlotte Flair emerged victorious against Bayley with a devastating Spear out of nowhere. As the dust cleared, though, The Role Model grabbed the mic and indicated that The Queen was about to be finished by a Damage CTRL beat down.

My Score: 2 out of 5

Final Verdict: 2/5

So is Smackdown a four-match show now? We’ve had two four-match episodes in a row now and I’ve got to question the motivation for that. Far too many promos, vignettes and in-ring talking heads to keep ANYONE’S interest this week. As for the matches themselves. Skip everything apart from the US Title match, which is the ONLY match in this episode worth a modicum of your time. If you really want to keep up to date on what happened on this episode of Smackdown I would wholeheartedly recommend sticking to YouTube clips and social media posts. This is NOT the way to get folks excited for your next PLE in my opinion!
