‘WWE NXT’ Review (Sept 26th 2023)

by Phil Wheat

Welcome to this week’s review of NXT, right here on Nerdly. Let’s get straight into it and see what went down in this episode…

Match #1: NXT Global Heritage Invitational Final – Butch def. Joe Coffey

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

The inaugural NXT Global Heritage Invitational came to a thrilling finale as Butch defeated Joe Coffey to earn a championship opportunity at NXT No Mercy against Heritage Cup Champion, Noam Dar. Wolfgang and Mark Coffey ended up being ejected from ringside and that evened up the odds for the Brawling Brute in a big way. After kicking out of a brutal Best of The Bells, Butch rallied and managed to hit the Bitter End to punch his ticket to No Mercy.

My Score: 3 out of 5

Match #2: Trick Williams def. Joe Gacy

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Schism continued its free fall as Joe Gacy fell to Trick Williams in a hotly contested singles matchup. Gacy was more hostile than usual, letting out guttural roars every time he locked Williams in a hold, but in the end, it just wasn’t his night. The leader of Schism went for his signature Upside Down, but in true Trick Willy style, he countered into a huge running knee and picked up the win.

My Score: 2 out of 5

Match #3: Baron Corbin def. Josh Briggs

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Despite his best effort, Josh Briggs came up short against Baron Corbin in a physical matchup. Corbin has bad mouthed the NXT locker room and Briggs stepped up to the challenge of proving him wrong, but it was easier said than done. Ultimately, Corbin proved to be too strong, too powerful, and too experienced as he hit End of Days to win the bout.

My Score: 1.5 out of 5

Match #4: OTM def. Hank Walker & Tank Ledger

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

The team of Bronco Nima & Lucien Price earned a seat at The Family’s dinner table after dispatching Hank & Tank in a tag team match. With SCRYPTS in their corner, the team now known as OTM aka Out The Mud delivered a statement by crushing Hank & Tank and pinning them in front of a stunned NXT Universe.

My Score: 1 out of 5

Match #5: Strap Match – Eddy Thorpe def. Dijak

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Eddy Thorpe got his payback against Dijak by defeating the bringer of Hard Justice in a flesh-ripping Strap Match. Thorpe was clearly motivated as Dijak desecrated his sacred land two weeks prior and the Native Superstar used the strap to exact some vengeance on Dijak. The match came to a thrilling conclusion when Thorpe, already full of lashes himself, hit a remarkable diving elbow to pick up the win. After the match, Dijak launched an assault on Thorpe and left him down and battered.

My Score: 3 out of 5

Match #6: Thea Hail def. Dani Palmer

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Chase U’s Thea Hail debuted her brand new adult look as she took out the upstart Dani Palmer in a matchup between two of NXT’s youngest Superstars. Decked out in leather and lace, Hail was still her impressive self in the ring, using her mat technician skills to keep the athletic Palmer down on the canvas.

My Score: 1 out of 5

Match #7: Fatal 4-Way Match – Trick Williams def. Dragon Lee, Tyler Bate, & Axiom

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Trick Williams punched his ticket to NXT No Mercy where he’ll face NXT North American Champion “Dirty” Dominik Mysterio for a chance at his first taste of gold. It wasn’t an easy task as Williams had to overcome Tyler Bate, Dragon Lee, and Axiom in a Fatal 4-Way Match, but he weathered the early storm brought on by his quicker opponents. In the end, Williams outlasted the mayhem, advantageously fell onto a downed Axiom, and earned a championship opportunity at NXT No Mercy.

My Score: 3.75 out of 5

Final Verdict: 2.5/5

This week’s NXT suffered from one too many quasi-squash matches scattered throughout the night. Thankfully the opening Heritage final delivered on the promise of the entire tournament and it will be interesting to see Butch face Noam Dar at No Mercy (Buth should kick his ass fast and cleanly IMHO). The strap match was an interesting choice and one that suffered in comparison to the one that took place on the competition’s show previously! The main event was surprisingly good, especially considering the weak start Trick Williams had on this show in his match against Joe Gacy earlier in the night, But hey, this one was not quite four-star material but if you like your wrestling to be a spot-fest, with plenty og high-flying, this one is for you!
