Friday Night Smackdown – Sept 8th 2023: Results & Review

by Phil Wheat

Welcome to this review of this past Friday’s episode of Friday Night Smackdown, right here on Nerdly. Let’s see what went down on this week’s episode!

Match #1: Charlotte Flair & Shotzi def. IYO SKY & Bayley

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

The Ballsy Badass had The Queen of WWE as her tag partner as they took on Bayley and WWE Women’s Champion IYO SKY of Damage CTRL. Shotzi had terrorized Bayley for weeks after the devious group shorn her green locks more than a month ago. After some back-and-forth action, Asuka reemerged to snatch the WWE Women’s Title from Dakota Kai’s hands, giving enough of a distraction for Shotzi to lock up the win for her team. After the match, Asuka and SKY had a face-to-face showdown.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #2: LA Knight def. Austin Theory

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Following his verbal sparring match with Austin Theory, LA Knight took it to Theory in an in-ring match. With Grayson Waller providing guest commentary, the smack talk was nonstop. Waller didn’t stop with just the smack talk, entering the ring while the referee’s back was turned to expose the turnbuckle. Despite the exposed turnbuckle, Knight still put away Theory with the BFT.

My Score: 3 out of 5

Match #3: The Judgment Day def. The Brawling Brutes

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Competing in their first contest since winning the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Titles, Finn Bálor and Damian Priest of The Judgment Day took on Butch and Ridge Holland of The Brawling Brutes. Holland and Butch took it to the champions as Holland used his incredible strength and Butch performed cold-as-ice moonsaults. “Dirty” Dominik Mysterio attempted to get involved but was met with a few Beats of the Bodhran from Butch. Butch was unable to get more reps as The Prince hit a Slingblade. Despite their moxie, Butch and Holland would fall to two South of Heavens and a Coup de Grâce.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #4: AJ Styles def. Jimmy Uso

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Looking to get back into the good graces of The Bloodline, Jimmy Uso took on “The Phenomenal One” AJ Styles. Styles rocked Jimmy, who narrowly escaping a Styles Clash attempt. With Jimmy in control, Solo Sikoa appeared at the top of the ramp. Styles kept up the offense, hitting a scintillating backbreaker, but Uso kept fighting. Sikoa turned his back on Jimmy, allowing Styles the opportunity to send Jimmy into Sikoa. Styles wrapped up the win with a Phenomenal Forearm. After the match, the Judgment Day delivered Styles to be put down with a Samoan Spike from Sikoa.

My Score: 2 out of 5

Final Verdict: 2.5/5

We all knew this week’s Smackdown was going to suffer thanks to the WWE also running the India Superstar Spectacle but to put on a show this poor was NOT something I expected. Only four matches on a 2-hour show is NEVER enough and they decided to stretch those matches out and include a ton of promos on top too… Fail. At least two of the matches we got this week were decent.
