‘Impact Wrestling’ Review (Apr 13th 2023)

by Phil Wheat

Welcome to this week’s review of Impact Wrestling, which this week opens with a Before the Impact match that saw El Reverso defeat Johnny Swinger. Let’s get into the review…

Match #1: Kenny King def. Frankie Kazarian

The following is courtesy of impactwrestling.com:

The winner of this match will secure the numbers advantage in Hardcore War this Sunday at Rebellion! King counters the slingshot DDT and drops Kazarian throat-first on the top rope. King hits a swinging backbreaker for two. King locks in the Camel Clutch but Kazarian breaks free. Kazarian begins to build momentum with a powerslam, followed by the springboard leg drop. Kazarian successfully hits the slingshot cutter but it’s not enough to keep King down. John Skyler gets up on the apron but Yuya Uemura pulls him down. Tensions are about to explode between the two teams at ringside. Kazarian forces King to tap out but the referee is distracted by Brian Myers. Moose spears Kazarian out of nowhere, allowing King to score the pinfall.

My Score: 3 out of 5

Match #2: Lince Dorado def. Black Taurus, Laredo Kidd & Rich Swann

The following is courtesy of impactwrestling.com:

Buckle up for what will certainly be an adrenaline-pumping showcase match featuring the stars of the X-Division! Taurus hits a corkscrew dive through the ropes, wiping out everyone on the floor. Dorado launches himself off the top rope, colliding with everyone on the outside. Taurus hits a Tower of Doom out of the corner as Kid and Dorado go down hard. Swann connects with a Frog Splash on Taurus. Moments later, Taurus hits Dorado with a pop-up Samoan Drop. Taurus continues the assault with a backbreaker, then powerbombs Dorado over the top rope into an unsuspecting Swann on the outside. Back in the ring, Kid hits a Crucifix Bomb on Taurus. Kid picks Taurus off the top with a Spanish Fly to win.

My Score: 4 out of 5

Match #3: Taylor Wilde def. Jessicka

The following is courtesy of impactwrestling.com:

Before the Death Dollz challenge The Coven for the Knockouts World Tag Team Titles this Sunday on Countdown to Rebellion, momentum is up for grabs in singles action! Wilde presents a tarot card to Jessicka, which sends her into a frenzy. Wilde blindsides her with a flurry of strikes, then takes her down at the knee. Wilde hits a backstabber to keep Jessicka grounded. Jessicka begins to build momentum with a running crossbody. King provides a distraction but Rosemary makes her pay with a spear. Wilde capitalizes with a swinging neckbreaker for three.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #4: Joe Hendry & Dirty Dango def. Callihan & Angels

The following is courtesy of impactwrestling.com:

Joe Hendry and Dirty Dango are out for revenge after Callihan brutally assaulted Director of Authority Santino Marella last week! Callihan hits Dango with a Death Valley Driver to gain the early advantage. Angels pummels him with a flurry of fists but it’s not enough to keep Dango down for the count. Both Dango and Callihan are down following a double clothesline. Dango makes the tag to Hendry who enters the match with a burst of speed. Hendry hits a Fallaway Slam on Callihan but Kon trips him up from the outside. Angels connects with a Frog Splash on Hendry but Dango breaks the pin attempt. Hendry ducks the incoming assault, causing Callihan to inadvertently strike Angels. Deaner confronts Callihan about his actions but meanwhile, Hendry finishes off Angels with the Standing Ovation.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #5: Tasha Steelz def. Gisele Shaw

The following is courtesy of impactwrestling.com:

Tasha Steelz returns to competition as she locks up with Gisele Shaw in a heated grudge match! Both Knockouts exchange slaps in the middle of the ring before Steelz gains control with an uppercut. Shaw retreats to the outside to regain her composure. Back in the ring, Shaw pulls Tasha down by her hair. Shaw distracts the referee as Evans delivers a thudding slam on the apron. Shaw is in total control following a snap suplex. Shaw hits a running corkscrew uppercut but it’s not enough put Tasha away. Steelz creates an opening with a jumping neckbreaker, followed by a running dropkick. Shaw counters a bulldog attempt, then catches her with lariat to the back of the head. The fight spills to the outside where Vidal and Evans distract Tasha. Shaw takes advantage and throws her into the ring steps. Shaw pulls down her kneepad but Tasha avoids in the incoming assault, sending Shaw knee-first into the steel. Back in the ring, Steelz targets the knee with a running dropkick to win.

My Score: 3 out of 5

Final Verdict: 3.5/5

Another solid night of wrestling action from the folks at Impact. This week’s show did well to build matches and storylines for Rebellion, the next Impact pay-per-view we got THAT promo from Mickie James… Good god that was some powerful stuff! The only downside was the lack of matches, as we only got 5 in the entire two-hour show!
