Friday Night Smackdown – Sep 9th 2022: Results & Review

by Phil Wheat

Welcome to this review of this past Friday’s episode of Friday Night Smackdown, right here on Nerdly. So let’s see what went down this week…

Match #1: Imperium def. The Brawling Brutes

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

In a slugfest, Intercontinental Champion Gunther, Ludwig Kaiser & Giovanni Vinci reigned supreme over Sheamus, Butch & Ridge Holland. After order broke down inside and outside the ring, Kaiser & Vinci used tag team precision to hit the Imperial Bomb on Holland for the win.

My Score: 3.5 out of 5

Match #2: Raquel Rodriguez & Aliyah def. Toxic Attraction

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

After injury knocked Toxic Attraction out of the WWE Women’s Tag Team Title Tournament, the explosive tandem got its chance to take on the WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions in a Championship Contender’s Match. Aliyah took out an interfering Gigi Dolin with a spear and paved the way for Raquel Rodriguez to hit the Tejana Bomb on Jacy Jayne to give the titleholders the victory.

My Score: 2 out of 5

Match #3: Fatal 5-Way Elimination Match – Ronda Rousey def. Sonya Deville, Natalya, Lacey Evans and Xia Li

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

In a dominant showing, The Baddest Woman on the Planet made Natalya tap out to the armbar and forced Evans to tap out to a second armbar as Deville simultaneously made Li submit on the other side of the ring. Then, The Rowdy One made Deville tap out to the ankle lock to earn the opportunity to challenge Liv Morgan for the SmackDown Women’s Title in a rematch at WWE Extreme Rules!

My Score: 2 out of 5

Match #4: The Street Profits and Hit Row def. Los Lotharios and Maximum Male Models

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

In a chaotic match, multiple Superstars went flying out of the ring with a series of aerial attacks, and B-Fab and Maxxine Dupri nearly threw down. Then, Ashante “Thee” Adonis and Top Dolla worked together to hit the Heavy Hitter on mån.sôör for the huge win.

My Score: 2 out of 5

Match #5: Drew McIntyre vs. Solo Sikoa (No-contest)

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

The Street Profits emerged to neutralize the threat of the interfering Bloodline in the final moments of Drew McIntyre’s man event matchup against Solo Sikoa. Out of nowhere, however, Karrion Kross suddenly attacked The SmackDown Warrior from behind and locked in the Kross Jacket to send a chilling message that he wants to reset the timeline as SmackDown went off the air.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Final Verdict: 2.5/5

This was a weird episode of Friday Night Smackdown… On the one hand we got a brilliant opening match but then the majority of the other matches on the card felt like leftovers from the Vince McMahon era – with crappy women’s match booking and a frankly terrible 8-man tag match with team that felt like they weren’t ready for NXT, never mind the main roster!
