Friday Night Smackdown – Aug 19th 2022: Results & Review

by Phil Wheat

Welcome to this review of this past Friday’s episode of Friday Night Smackdown, right here on Nerdly. We’ve got more of Triple H’s reimagining of WWE this week AND it’s a special 1200th episode of the show! So let’s see what went down…

Match #1: WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship Tournament – Toxic Attraction def. Natalya and Sonya Deville

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

In the final first-round matchup of the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship Tournament, Natalya & Sonya Deville joined forces against former NXT Women’s Tag Team Champions Toxic Attraction. Prior to the matchup, Bayley, Dakota Kai and IYO SKY bought tickets to obverse the showdown from the front row. The self-proclaimed B.O.A.T. failed to see Jacy Jayne tag in to the contest. As a result, when The Queen of Harts locked Gigi Dolin in the Sharpshooter, Jacy snuck up behind her and picked up the pinfall in sneaky fashion! With the victory, Toxic Attraction now move on to the semifinals to battle Raquel Rodriguez & Aliyah.

My Score: 2 out of 5

Match #2: Fatal 5-Way Match for Intercontinental Title shot – Sheamus def. Ricochet, Madcap Moss, Happy Corbin and Sami Zayn

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Sheamus outlasted Ricochet, Madcap Moss, Happy Corbin and Sami Zayn in an out-of-control Fatal 5-Way Match. In final moments of one of the best matches of the year, Sami Zayn returned to the ring despite an injury and nearly pinned Ricochet. Before he could get the three-count, however, Corbin grabbed his leg, pulled him out of the ring and hurled The Master Strategist into the ring post. Before Corbin could steal the win, though, Sheamus came out of nowhere and blasted him with a Brogue Kick to pick up the huge win! With the victory, The Celtic Warrior earned the right to challenge Intercontinental Champion Gunther at WWE Clash at the Castle in Cardiff, Wales on Sept. 3.

My Score: 3.5 out of 5

Match #3: Liv Morgan def. Shotzi

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Despite being injured en route to her title showdown against Shayna Baszler at WWE Clash at the Castle, the resilient SmackDown Women’s Champion Liv Morgan triumphed over Shotzi, who was out to hurt the titleholder. As Liv was celebrating her well-deserved win, Baszler attacked out of nowhere. However, The Submission Magician opted to stop herself before she broke Morgan’s arm because it would prevent Liv from competing in Cardiff, Wales. Instead, she pledged to break her arm and take her title at WWE Clash at the Castle. She then added the exclamation point by kicking Liv in the face.

My Score: 2 out of 5

News of the Night:

  1. Ronda Rousey was “arrested” in the opening of the show.
  2. Drew McIntyre kicked Roman Reigns head off to end the show… instead of their being a main event.

Final Verdict: 3/5

Well that was a thing. Three matches, two of which were bog-standard WWE product and a third, the multi-man match, that felt like it was part of a totally different show. A better show. For a special 1200th episode of Smackdown this wasn’t all that special. But i guess, nay hope, that Triple H and co. are saving the good stuff for Clash at the Castle in Cardiff this weekend!
