Friday Night Smackdown – July 1st 2022: Results & Review

by Phil Wheat

Welcome to this review of this past Friday’s episode of Friday Night Smackdown, right here on Nerdly. This week’s episode is the go-home show for this years Money in the Bank pay per view, so hopefully we get some great action in the build-up to MitB. Fingers crossed!

Match #1: Good Old Fashioned Battle Royal – Winner: Happy Corbin

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

An impromptu Good Old Fashioned Battle Royal took over SmackDown and featured established Men’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match combatants Riddle, Seth “Freakin” Rollins, Sheamus, Sami Zayn, Omos and Drew McIntyre. The match also included Ladder Match hopefuls The Miz, Madcap Moss, Happy Corbin and Ezekiel, each of whom had their eyes on the final spot in the high-stakes showdown for the coveted Money in the Bank contract. The free-for-all seemed to be coming down to The Celtic Warrior against The SmackDown Warrior. Unfortunately for both Superstars, they forgot about Happy Corbin, who previously left the ring under the bottom rope and waited for the perfect moment to reenter the ring and eliminate both Superstars! As the dust cleared, the victorious Corbin flaunted his win in front of SmackDown commentator Pat McAfee.

My Score: 2 out of 5

Match #2: The Viking Raiders def. The New Day

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Before The New Day’s match against The New and Vicious Viking Raiders, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods initiated a pre-match altercation with Erik and Ivar and paid the price.

My Score: 0 out of 5

Match #3: Alexa Bliss, Liv Morgan & Asuka def. Raquel Rodriguez, Lacey Evans & Shotzi

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

In a Battle of the Brands, six of the participants from Saturday’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match represented their show looking for a big win heading into the Premium Live Event. When order completely disintegrated in the final moments of the action and everybody started taking each other out, Liv Morgan took advantage of the chaos and drove Shotzi into the canvas face-first for the victory. In the aftermath, Becky Lynch sent a message of her own with a hit-and-run attack on Asuka with the Manhandle Slam.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #4:Money in the Bank Ladder Match Qualifier – Madcap Moss def. Ezekiel, The Miz and Happy Corbin

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

In SmackDown’s main event, Madcap Moss punched his ticket to the Money in the Bank Ladder Match by overcoming Ezekiel, The Miz and Happy Corbin in a Fatal 4-Way Match. With the huge victory, the winner of the 2022 Andre the Giant Battle Royal now has the opportunity to go to war Saturday night for a contract that can be cashed in for an Undisputed WWE Universal Title Match anytime in the next year.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Final Verdict: 2/5

Wow. Four matches in two hours… And one of those can’t really even be called a match (Viking Raiders/New Day). So much for a build to Money in the Bank! If this did anything it made me not look forward to watching MitB! One of the worse two hours of wrestling from WWE in a while now IMHO.
