Friday Night Smackdown – Jan 1st 2021: Results & Review

by Nathan Favel

Welcome to this week’s Friday Night SmackDown review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and it’s a new year…for me to poop on! Baby Yoda ate those f—— eggs…little ass-hole. I’ve decided to be the Chinese now. So don’t f— with me, or I’ll pow kun di mahn your jung do li pan gobai lu shou bok choi! We have the first SmackDown of the year and the first to follow the 5 star hit that I reviewed last week. It wasn’t a perfect episode, but it was a great one. Okay, let’s pinch our nipples and scream “BADONKADONK MAURA TIERNEY PIIIIIIIIIIIIIILEDRIVERRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!”

Match #1: Big E def. Baron Corbin (Disqualification)

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

After beating Sami Zayn to recapture the Intercontinental Title in one of the biggest wins of his career on Christmas Day, Big E battled the intolerable King Corbin in their scheduled one-on-one matchup – with the self-proclaimed “Master Strategist” joining the SmackDown announce team. However, when it looked like Big E was about to close the door on Corbin, Zayn suddenly attacked and brought an end to the match by disqualification.

My Opinion: 2.4 out of 5

Match #2: Big E & Apollo Crews def. Sami Zayn & King Corbin

The Powerhouse of Positivity soon found himself suffering a 3-on-1 assault at the hands of Zayn and The Knights of the Lone Wolf. Until, all of a sudden, Apollo Crews emerged to clear the ring of all opposition. As a result, Big E joined together with Crews to take on Sami Zayn & King Corbin. When The Lone Wolf grew frustrated with Zayn trying to run the show and nearly hitting him, King Corbin and his minions decided to take a walk and leave Sami out to dry. This opened the door for Crews to close the door for his team with the Spinning Sit-out Powerbomb.

My Opinion: 2.6 out of 5

Match #3: The Riott Squad def. Tamina & Natalya

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Although Billie Kay thought she might get a partner to team with her once again against The Riott Squad, she instead unintentionally inspired an unlikely alliance between Natalya and Tamina, as they emerged together for a match against Liv Morgan and Ruby Riott. During the match, Billie stayed at ringside, although it was unclear at times which team she was supporting. Then, Kay got up on the ring steps. This distracted Tamina long enough for Morgan to roll her up for the quick three-count. However, when Billie tried to celebrate with The Riott Squad, they opted to leave without her.

My Opinion: 2.3 out of 5

Match #4: Bayley & Carmella def. Sasha Banks & Bianca Belair

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

In an explosive tag team showdown, SmackDown Women’s Champion Sasha Banks once again joined forces with Bianca Belair against Bayley & Carmella. When Bianca and Bayley battled outside the ring, Reginald got himself involved in the action. Moments after The Boss delivered a slap to Reginald on the apron, Carmella used the distraction to plant Banks face-first into the canvas and pin the SmackDown Women’s Champion!

My Opinion: 2.6 out of 5

Match #5: Daniel Bryan & Otis def. Cesaro & Shinsuke Nakamura

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

One week after Daniel Bryan declared his entry into the Royal Rumble Match, The Leader of the “Yes!” Movement prepared for the huge match by teaming with the Alpha Academy’s “Blue-Collar Solid” against Cesaro & Shinsuke Nakamura. The Artist and The Swiss Cyborg knocked Otis from the ring. However, when they turned their attention to Bryan, Cesaro was knocked from the ring with Bryan’s Running Knee. And with his partner gone, Nakamura was forced to tap out to the “Yes!” Lock.

My Opinion: 3.1 out of 5

Match #6: (Main Event) Kevin Owens def. Jey Uso

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

After Roman Reigns retained his Universal Championship against Kevin Owens in controversial fashion last week, KO claimed The Head of the Table needs Jey Uso to keep the title and challenged “Main Event” Jey Uso to a match. Owens defeated Uso with the Stunner.

My Opinion: 3 out of 5

News Of The Night:

  1. Sonya Deville has been re-instated.
  2. Adam Pearce’s run as booker for Ring Of Honor was mentioned (implied) when Kevin Owens called him his old boss and how he felt like Pearce had gone soft.
  3. Kevin Owens and Roman Reigns brawled and seem poised for a Royal Rumble prize fight.
  4. Big E defends the Intercontinental Title against Apollo Crews, next week.

Final Verdict: 2.4/5

The first half of this show was dull as paint drying on a hawk’s ass…a Hudson Hawk! AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! Big E was pretty much the whole first half hour, which was fine in principle, but the matches he was involved in were the height of tedium. Oooooooo…look who’s getting wordy all of a sudden. Sami Zayn was a great character here and did his usual shtick to p*ss off a crowd of zero. KO and Roman spent the whole night at odds with one another, which spilled over into the KO/Jey main event. That whole match was less a match and more of a brawl with competition. That…was a terrible sentence, but since there’s no delete button yet…f— it. The best match on the show was a decent tag match that included Daniel Bryan/Otis and Cesaro/Shinsuke going through the motions in breezy fashion. There wasn’t much going on in the women’s tag match that Sasha Banks and Bayley appeared in, but it wasn’t terrible either. Also, there was another tag match with The Riott Squad, but it was also paint-by-numbers by and large. Cyndi Lauper sang weird for New Year’s Eve. This show was not much on its own accord, but was twice as less when compared to last week’s fantastic show. Still, this was worth a couple of gabagoos and so it shall receive.
