Friday Night Smackdown – March 20th 2020: Results & Review

by Nathan Favel

Welcome to this week’s Friday Night SmackDown review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have two matches on a show that seems to have a roster that is willing to wrestle. I’d like to say that the lack of matches is just because of COVID-19, but this is just the way Vince books. This is probably gonna suck, but let’s give this a chance.

Match #1: Daniel Bryan & Drew Gulak def. Shinsuke Nakamura & Cesaro

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

With Daniel Bryan & Drew Gulak continuing to strengthen their bond, the two looked to test themselves against their mutual rivals, Shinsuke Nakamura & Cesaro. Intercontinental Champion Sami Zayn, Nakamura and Cesaro ambushed Bryan & Gulak after Bryan’s victory over The Swiss Cyborg last week, and Bryan & Gulak came out the gates hot in this tag team contest. In the clutch, Bryan and Gulak worked together to allow The “Yes!” Man to catch Cesaro with a beautiful sunset flip for three, enraging Sami Zayn, who had been chastising Bryan & Gulak from the announce desk.

My Opinion: 3.3 out of 5 – This was a fun taste of what this should have been, which is a much longer wrestling clinic. It’s nice to see Gulak in the mix. There wasn’t any-thing bad here, but it never got the chance to be as great as it could have been, which is par for the course in the WWE it seems. All in all, this wasn’t a bad opener, but with the athletes involved, why can’t you just let them do their thing?

Match #2: (Main Event) The Miz & John Morrison def. Heavy Machinery (Disqualification)

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Miz & John Morrison used another episode of “The Dirt Sheet” to insult seemingly every SmackDown tag team, including Heavy Machinery, their opponents tonight who interrupted the mockery. Otis & Tucker were rocking and rolling against the SmackDown Tag Team Champions until Dolph Ziggler arrived, goading Otis by showing pictures of him and Mandy Rose having a great time together. Otis froze in place and then went absolutely mad, pummeling Ziggler and attempting to attack him with a steel chair. However, Otis then went after Miz & Morrison in a complete, blind rage. To no avail, Tucker attempted to reign in Otis, who brutalized the SmackDown Tag Team Champions with a steel chair to cause a disqualification. Although Otis was finally calmed (somewhat) by Tucker, the damage was certainly done… and it put a massive look of terror on Ziggler’s face.

My Opinion: 2.7 out of 5 – This was going some-where, but it got stopped long before it could even reach the toll booth. These two teams have chemistry, but it’s hard to know that when the match in question is just there to push the Dolph Ziggler/Otis feud. There’s a great match between these four that has yet to happen, but it wasn’t here.

News Of The Night:

  1. The John Cena/Bray Wyatt Wrestlemania 30 match was shown in its entirety to push the Cena/Wyatt feud.
  2. Wrestlemania will be a two-night event.
  3. Wrestlemania 30 will be shown in its entirety this Sunday on ESPN.
  4. Rob Gronkowski, Mojo Rawley and Elias brawled with King Corbin to push an Elias/Corbin match for Wrestlemania.
  5. Daniel Bryan gets to challenge for Sami Zayn’s Intercontinental Title at Wrestlemania if Drew Gulak beats Shinsuke Nakamura, next week.
  6. Paige shocked Bayley & Sasha Banks with a massive WrestleMania announcement, which is that Bayley will defend the Women’s Title in a Six-Pack Match against Lacey Evans, Dana Brooke, Tamina, Naomi and Sasha Banks.
  7. Otis/Dolph Ziggler is being teased for Wrestlemania.
  8. Goldberg and Roman Reigns nearly come to blows after signing their WrestleMania contract.

Final Verdict: 2.6/5

Lots of Wrestlemania matches were built toward and Gronkowski was quite good is his promo, but the lack of wrestling hurt the show, as usual. Maybe Vince should have watched AEW Dynamite to get an idea of what a show without a crowd looks like? Raw got by with the Royal Rumble Match being shown, but that show was lousy otherwise. SmackDown…needs a lot of work.
