‘NXT: UK’ Review (May 15th 2019)

Welcome to this week’s NXT: UK review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have five matches in one hour. I don’t know about you, but that doesn’t sound like a good idea. Let’s see if I’m over-reacting or not.

Match #1: Piper Niven def. Jamie Hayter

The following is following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Jamie Hayter may have come to NXT UK with confidence, but after she made the mistake of slapping Piper Niven, all she walked away with was the full wrath of her opponent. Niven culminated her beatdown with a Michinoku Driver for her latest dominant triumph.

My Opinion: 1.5 out of 5 – This went, what, a minute? Length doesn’t guarantee failure, but it sure as hell doesn’t help. They should have just had them tap dance instead. Wait, no. Vince might get dumb ideas, even with All Elite Wrestling coming down the pike.

Match #2: Jordan Devlin def. Ligero in a Fatal 4-Way Qualifying Match

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

In a truly high stakes back-and-forth showdown, Ligero fought through a rib injury to stay neck-and-neck with Jordan Devlin. In the final moments of the matchup, The Irish Ace dragged his masked opponent off the ropes and into a thunderous backdrop driver for the win.
The victory earned Devlin the second slot in the imminent Fatal 4-Way to determine the No. 1 Contender to the WWE United Kingdom Championship.

My Opinion: 3 out of 5 – These two have been some of the best things in the WWE for some time and, with this match, that trend continued here. These two have a lot of chemistry together and, if I were the booker, I’d be keeping them around each other more often (unless they hate each other, which I don’t assume to be the case). Any-way, this was a good match.

Match #3: Ilja Dragunov def. Jack Star

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

The intense Ilja Dragunov turned in mesmerizing debut, as he met the attack of Jack Starz with a smile and finished him off with the devastating Torpedo Moscow. He came, he saw, he conquered. Holy (Mos)cow!

My Opinion: 2 out of 5 – The new guy was fine…I think. I wouldn’t go looking for one of the great matches in this case, but it did what it needed to do.

Match #4: Xia Brookside vs. Killer Kelly ended in a No Contest

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

In the middle of a spirited contest between Xia Brookside and Killer Kelly, Jinny suddenly interrupted and ushered in the imposing Jazzy Gabert. Though it looked as if the two opponents might band together for a moment to take on the awesome presence, Kelly opted out at the last second and left Brookside to be driven face-first into the canvas. Clearly, The Fashionista’s aspirations to run NXT UK just got a much stronger.

My Opinion: 1.5 out of 5 – If you look at the WWE write-up from above, you’ll get a pretty good idea as to what’s wrong with the WWE. This match got short-changed on time and quality thanks to a lame run-in deal.

Match #5: (Main Event) Dave Mastiff def. Wolfgang in a Fatal 4-Way Qualifying Match

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Gallus’ Wolfgang brought the full force of his game against Dave Mastiff, hoisting his massive adversary onto his shoulders and slamming him down like a sack of potatoes. When Wolfgang missed the Howling Senton off the top rope, however, the “Bomber” roared back and finished him off with the earth-shattering Cannonball to capture the third slot in the Fatal 4-Way to crown the No. 1 contender to the WWE United Kingdom Title. The action was far from over, though, as The Coffey Brothers quickly stormed the ring and joined together with a rejuvenated Wolfgang to unleash a devastating post-match assault on Mastiff.

My Opinion: 2.5 out of 5 – This was good for what it was, but it was less than five minutes, so there you go.

News Of The Night:

  1. Pete Dunne fights WALTER for the NXT: UK World Title, next week.
  2. Jenny introduced Jazzy Gabert after they attacked Xia Brookside and Killer Kelly.

Final Verdict: 1.5/5

This was a lousy show that had one strong match, one decent one and a bunch that were just a waste of time.
