‘Impact Wrestling’ Review (April 4th 2019)

by Nathan Favel

Welcome to this week’s Impact Wrestling review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have the return of Petey Williams and Madison Rayne as a point of pride for this card. Let’s see if Impact is getting taken to the Pet Sematary or to Dairy Queen. I don’t know about you, but I don’t trust any-thing that isn’t spelled right.

Match #1: Petey Williams def. Trey, Idris Abraham, Jake Crist, Aiden Prince & Ace Austin – X-Division Scramble Match

The following is courtesy of impactwrestling.com:

In this free-for-all, the first person to score a pinfall or submission will be declared the victor! Trey hits a springboard flip dive to the outside. Petey jumps from the inside of the ring to the floor, hitting Jake with a Hurricanrana on the way down. Jake takes out Trey with a Death Valley Driver. Prince launches himself off the top rope, crashing into Idris on the mat. Petey locks in the Sharpshooter on Trey but Jake breaks it up. There’s a huge Tower of Doom out of the corner, with Jake getting the better of the exchange! Petey hits Trey with the Canadian Destroyer but the pin is broken up! Petey hits Jake with a Canadian Destroyer off the top rope to win!

My Take: 3 out of 5 – This was just one spot after another, but the spots looked great and it was just as great to see Petey get the victory.

Match #2: oVe (Sami Callihan & Madman Fulton) w/ Dave Crist def. X-Division Champion Rich Swann & Willie Mack

The following is courtesy of impactwrestling.com:

Willie hits Callihan with a 619, followed by a neckbreaker for a two count. Fulton hits an impressive delayed suplex on Willie. Willie turns the tide with a Samoan Drop on Callihan, followed by a standing Moonsault! oVe wear Willie down until he can make the hot tag to Swann! Swann hits a handspring cutter on Callihan. Willie flies over the top rope, taking out everyone on the floor! Fulton catches Willie in mid-air and slams the big man to the mat. Meanwhile, Callihan connects with the Cactus Special Piledriver on Swann to win.

My Take: 3 out of 5 – This was standard stuff, but the standard seemed to be higher than it might have been in other circumstances.

Match #3: Jordynne Grace def. Madison Rayne – #1 Contender’s Match For A Knockouts Championship Shot

The following is courtesy of impactwrestling.com:

Grace demonstrates her strength advantage with throws out of the corner. Rayne attempts a crossbody off the second rope but bounces right off Grace! Grace misses a splash, allowing Rayne to build momentum. Rayne connects with the crossbody for a near fall. Grace hits a sitdown powerbomb for a two count! Grace hits the Grace Driver to score the win!

My Take: 3 out of 5 – Nothing fancy here, but the match had the right moves at the right time and served as a very effective way for Grace to become a viable contender to the Knockout’s Title.

Match #4: Rohit Raju w/ Gama Singh & Raj Singh def. Fallah Bahh

The following is courtesy of impactwrestling.com:

Raj gets up on the apron. Rohit takes advatange off the distraction to ground the big man. Fallah charges at Rohit but he moves, causing Fallah to crash into the steel ring post. Fallah hits a Samoan Drop, followed by a crossbody. Gama distracts the referee, allowing Raj to push Fallah off the top! Rohit scores a backslide pin to win!

My Take: 1.5 out of 5 – This just never got off the ground to fly far enough to go an-where, due to the wrestling just feeling to sloppy and slow.

Match #5: (Main Event) Eli Drake & Eddie Edwards def. LAX (Santana & Ortiz)

The following is courtesy of impactwrestling.com:

Before the match begins, Eli Drake and Konnan get into a heated argument. The referee ejects him from ringside. Konnan is furious but the match must go on! LAX connect with a flurry of double team offence on Drake in the early going. Santana hits Eddie with an Enzuigiri in the corner. Santana is about to fly when Drake picks his ankle from the outside. Drake connects with a big Superplex on Santana. Eddie follows up with a Blue Thunder Bomb for a near fall. Santana hits a rolling cutter on Eddie, followed by a Codebreaker from Ortiz. Eddie is about to lose when Drake pulls Ortiz off the cover! Lucha Bros come to ringside but Santana launches himself off the top to take them out! Meanwhile, Drake hits Ortiz with the kendo stick off the distraction. Eddie connects with the Boston Knee Party to win!

My Take: 3 out of 5 – This was a very exuberant main event, due to Eddie still playing the part of the wacko, as well as Eli slowly becoming more accustomed to Eddie’s free-wheelin’ way of kickin’ ass. The wrestling was more on the brawling side, but it worked well for what was necessary to make the match successful. LAX did well here and were just as intimidating as ever. Overall, this was a fun jaunt through the forest of action…this sentence sucks.
