When a game wants to tell the player a story, there can be many methods to do this. Some games though take the impressive option of not using a narrator to explicitly do this, but let the story unfold as part of the game, allowing the player to emotionally connect and interpret it for themselves. […]
First person shooters. Yeah, lets just say that I don’t get along with modern-day FPS games. Give me Doom or its sequels, any games from the Unreal or Quake franchises. Hell, even the likes of Hexen and Duke Nukem 3D. Now THOSE are first person shooters I an get behind. But Call of Duty and […]
Beginning with Disgaea 2, I have a long history of acquiring Disgaea games early in the lifecycle of Sony consoles, and unfortunately I’ve never really been able to find a killer hook to keep me interested. You might ask why I keep buying them then, and the honest answer is that that they should appeal […]
When games are inspired by others, they often fight to get out of their shadow. Portal Knights is a game that has two shadows to try to escape from, both Minecraft and Dark Souls. The question is, should it have to? Portal Knights is a new cooperative action RPG game where you pick to be […]
To keep platform games fresh, many focus more on the puzzle element rather than killing the character with endless monsters looking for blood. Seasons After Fall is one of those games that uses the puzzle element more, and provides a nice relaxing walk through the seasons. The best way to go into the game is […]
Full disclosure: I’ve enjoyed my time with Renowned Explorers much more than I thought that I would. This charming, beautiful and deceptively detailed adventure game is everything that makes independently developed games such a rich and diverse source of engaging content. I say that because being a little bit frank, there’s a lot of goodness […]
I remember the first two Syberia games for the fairly strong story and the fact that they were good point & click adventures when there seemed to be no others around. That was about thirteen years ago though, and now Syberia 3 has arrived to carry on the story, but is it worth the wait? […]
Sometimes it is feels good to be bad, and Antihero is all about being bad. A turn-based multiplayer strategy game it gives you the task of taking over the streets and becoming a master villain. That is of course unless your opponent does it first. To dominate the game map, you need to hire street […]
Let’s be honest. When Nintendo announced the release of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, it was met with a less than stellar response. After all, technially this “new” Nintendo Switch game is anything but new… Instead the Switch iteration is a port of the existing Wii U game, with a few new bells and whistles and […]
If you are a fan of Super Smash Bros. you’ll know the fun of competitive platform fighting combat. The hectic battles to drive others off the edge of the platform, while not falling off yourself makes for good entertainment for audiences too. Brawlout is a new platform fighter that is recognisable as a ‘broslike’ game, […]
Playing the first Outlast game, it was a good blend of exploration, running for your life, and escaping monsters. When the sequel was announced, there was a high expectation of what would come. Now we’ve had chance to play Outlast 2, does it manage the same scares or is it just another forgettable horror sequel? […]
In DIGITAL SHORTS we review some of the latest video games that are only available digitally (at least in the UK), in a short-form review format. In this edition we take a look at The Disney Afternoon Collection, a brand-new compilation of six classic Disney/Capcom games from the NES era – available now on PS4, […]
This past weekend Replay Events, one of the UK’s premier gaming and event entertainment companies and the driving force behind PLAY Expo Blackpool AND Manchester (both events that team Nerdly have attended in the past), added another Northern event to their roster: PLAY Expo Leeds, an all-day gaming celebration taking place which took place at […]
If there is one genre of game that has pulled me in now I review games, it has to be the JRPG. While they tend to consume a lot of time, they tend to be full of lore, and drag you into a zany story. While sometimes they may not deliver, when they do they […]
Retro gaming is huge right now. Huge. And it’s only getting bigger… From the like of fan favourites multiplatform consoles like Retron 5 and fab handhelds like the Supaboy S; to the NES Mini/Classic, an official re-release of Nintendo’s classic console – which only brought retro gaming further into the mainstream (as the constant sold […]
When a game opens up with you in an old Victorian style building, there are some assumptions made. This is what happens when you first load up The Crow’s Eye. Wandering the corridors of the Medical University of Crowswood though, it isn’t long before things start to change. In 1947 four students disappeared within the […]
I never thought I’d really be into survival games, but looking at my Steam library tells a tale of zombie outbreaks and dinosaur training. With the likes of H1Z1 and ARK in my playlist, Conan Exiles probably fits right in… My style of survival is to be a loner though, and to enjoy the ability […]
There is something about being mocked by Styx during Styx: Shards of Darkness that reveals what has improved since Styx: Master of Shadows. The green assassin with an attitude has received a sense of humour overhaul and it definitely shows. If you’ve played the original game, you’ll know what to expect in terms of gameplay: this is […]
