‘Awakenings’ 4K UHD Review
Stars: Robert De Niro, Robin Williams, Julie Kavner, Ruth Nelson, John Heard, Penelope Ann Miller, Alice Drummond | Written by Oliver Sacks, Steven Zaillian | Directed by Penny Marshall

The world lost a true comedy legend with the passing of Robin Williams, but his work across stand-up, television, talk shows, and cinema continues to introduce new generations to his boundless talent. While he was best known for his manic, high-octane humour, Williams gradually began to explore more dramatic territory, revealing a depth that many hadn’t expected.
That transition took a major step in 1990 when Williams starred alongside Robert De Niro in a film inspired by real events. That film was Awakenings. Now, to mark the 35th anniversary of its release, Sony Pictures has brought the film to 4K Ultra HD, giving this powerful drama a fitting new lease of life.
Based on a true story of a maverick doctor and the patients whose lives he changes. Dr. Malcolm Sayer (Robin Williams) is a shy research physician who uses an experimental drug to “awaken” the catatonic victims of a rare disease. Leonard (Robert DeNiro) is the first patient to receive the controversial treatment. His awakening, filled with awe and enthusiasm, proves a rebirth for Sayer too, and he reveals life’s simple but unutterably sweet pleasures to the doctor.
Robert De Niro and Robin Williams both deliver unforgettable performances, while director Penny Marshall – best known to many as Laverne from Laverne & Shirley – proves equally assured behind the camera. The result is a wonderfully heartfelt and deeply emotional cinematic experience that resonates long after the credits roll.
Sony Home Entertainment have transferred Awakenings to 4K in 2160p, presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. There are several audio tracks to choose from – English Dolby Atmos, English 5.1, English 2-Channel Surround, a French DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 and a Spanish DTS-HD Master Audio mono track. Finally, there are subtitles in English, Spanish and French.
Sony’s 4K transfer is simply gorgeous. The natural film grain is on full display; the colours and textures are delivering a visually pleasing viewing experience. The audio is rich with every spoken word clear. In addition to a simply amazing 4K film experience, Sony added some nice bonus features to this release, including:
Special Features:
- Making-of Featurette: A behind-the-scenes look at the film’s production and legacy.
- Archival Interviews: Cast and crew reflect on the story’s impact and their experiences.
- Theatrical Trailer
A making-of featurette is always a welcome addition to any physical media release, and the inclusion of archival interviews is a nice bonus, particularly if you’ve never seen them before. Rounding things out, Sony has also included a digital copy of the film, redeemable via Movies Anywhere – a handy extra for those who like to take their films on the go.
Robin Williams’ performance in Awakenings deserves to stand alongside his very best work, including Mrs. Doubtfire, Dead Poets Society, Good Morning, Vietnam, and more. He was a truly remarkable actor, and while he may be gone, his legacy continues to live on through the films he left behind.
***** 5/5
