‘WWE Smackdown’ Review (May 9 2025)

by Phil Wheat

Welcome to this review of this past Friday’s episode of Smackdown, right here on Nerdly. Let’s see what went down on this week’s show!

Match #1: LA Knight & Damian Priest def. Jacob Fatu & Solo Sikoa

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

With tensions running high between LA Knight and Damian Priest during the tag team match against United States Champion Jacob Fatu and Solo Sikoa, The Megastar turned the tables before Solo could hit the Samoan Spike and executed the BFT for the victory. After the match, Priest confronted Knight, and the two inevitably came to blows. This made it easy for The Samoan Werewolf to attack both Superstars. He forgot about Drew McIntyre, however, who emerged to take out the unhinged titleholder with a Claymore Kick one night before the United States Title Fatal 4-Way Match at WWE Backlash.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #2: Alexa Bliss & Zelina Vega def. Chelsea Green & Piper Niven

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Competing for the first time since the Royal Rumble Match, Alexa Bliss reemerged as Zelina Vega’s surprise partner. After helping the Women’s United States Champion clear the ring of Piper Niven, Five Feet of Fury hit Chelsea Green with the Sister Abigail DDT for the three-count.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #3: WWE Women’s Title No. 1 Contenders’ Match – Nia Jax def. Jade Cargill

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

After Naomi attacked Tiffany Stratton at ringside, Nia Jax took advantage of the distraction and stole a win over Jade Cargill with the Annihilator to become the No. 1 Contender to the WWE Women’s Championship.

My Score: 2 out of 5

Match #4: Fraxiom def. The Street Profits

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Still war-torn from their epic TLC Match two weeks ago, WWE Tag Team Champions Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford accepted a bold challenge from up-and-coming tandem Nathan Frazer and Axiom. Fraxiom continued to impress when they hit Catapulta Infernal on Ford for the stunning non-title victory against the WWE Tag Team Champions.

My Score: 3.5 out of 5

Match #5: Aleister Black def. Carmelo Hayes

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Moments after The Miz interfered and accidently cost Carmelo Hayes his match against Aleister Black, The A-Lister took issue and once again suffered Black Mass.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #6: Andrade & Rey Fenix def. Los Garza

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

After Legado del Fantasma attacked Rey Fenix earlier in the night, Andrade joined forces with the masked Superstar against Angel and Berto. In a showdown filled with incredible moments, Andrade finished Berto with the Message. When Samtos Escobar berated Los Garza after the match, a frustrated Berto slapped his hand away and walked out alone.

My Score: 3 out of 5

Final Verdict: 2.5/5

Honestly, this was a way better go-home show than I expected. We got some good promos, not nearly as much dead time as I was worried about, and a couple of really solid matches. Fraxiom vs. the Street Profits was way better than I thought it would be. Jax vs. Tiffany for the title, which is clearly where things are headed, feels like a total waste – especially given all the good female talent the WWE have OTHER than Nia Jax. It was cool to see Alexa Bliss back this week, too, though I’m not sure pairing her in tag team matches is right for her. Cena cut a great promo and then got dropped with an RKO to close the show. I’m pretty sure he’s keeping the title at Backlash. Overall, for a go-home show, this was actually pretty decent.
