Friday Night Smackdown – Aug 25th 2023: Results & Review

by Phil Wheat

Welcome to this review of this past Friday’s episode of Friday Night Smackdown, right here on Nerdly. Let’s see what went down on this week’s episode!

Match #1: Rey Mysterio def. Grayson Waller

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

The LWO’s Santos Escobar emerged to neutralize an interfering Austin Theory. This paved the way for United States Champion Rey Mysterio to overcome Grayson Waller with the 619/Splash combination. The victory gave The Legendary Luchador major momentum en route to his U.S Title Match against Theory at WWE Payback.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #2: WWE Women’s Title Match – IYO SKY def. Zelina Vega

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Despite the fact that Zelina Vega had previously defeated IYO SKY on two outings, The Genius of the Sky successfully defended her WWE Women’s Championship for the first time in a hard fought matchup. After hurling her opponent into the steel ring steps, she returned the ring and hit The LWO Superstar with the devastating Over The Moonsault for the three-count.

My Score: 3 out of 5

Match #3: Terry Funk Hardcore Tag Team Match – The Street Profits def. The Brawling Brutes

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

What started as a Terry Funk Hardcore Tag Team Match, pitting the Brawling Brutes against The Street Profits to honor the late WWE Hall of Famer, soon ended in controversy. Just when it seemed like the Fight Night tag team had the advantage, a sudden Bobby Lashley Spear completely demolished Butch outside the ring and allowed Montez Ford & Angelo Dawkins to take out Ridge Holland with the Revelation through the table.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #4: LA Knight def. Finn Bálor

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

In the height of a main event showdown between two of Bray Wyatt’s greatest opponents, LA Knight took The Judgment Day’s Finn Bálor off the top rope before he could execute the Coup De Grace. He then quickly followed up with the BFT to secure the emotional victory.

My Score: 3 out of 5

Final Verdict: 2.5/5

This week’s Smackdown was a very sombre affair given the passing of both Terry Funk and Bray Wyatt, with a lot of video packages for both wrestlers and touching promos from both Cody Rhodes (Terry Funk) and LA Knight (Bray Wyatt). The latter was an interesting choice to talk about Wyatt but given the fact others close to Wyatt, like Alexa Bliss, couldn’t make the show due to Wyatt’s passing being so close to the show, it’s understandable. Of the four matches we got the real highlight was IYO Sky versus Selina Vega, which worked because the two seem to have real chemistry in the ring and their styles work well together. Given his promo on Wyatt, it was apt that LA Knight got the win tonight too.
