‘Impact Wrestling’ Review (Jun 29th 2023)

by Phil Wheat

Welcome to this week’s review of Impact Wrestling, which this week opens with a Before the Impact match that saw Johnny Swinger defeat Bhupinder Gujjar. Let’s get into the review…

Match #1: X-Division Championship – Chris Sabin def. Trey Miguel (DQ)

The following is courtesy of impactwrestling.com:

IMPACT! kicks off with Trey Miguel’s contractually-obligated rematch for the X-Division Title! The fight spills to the outside where Miguel hits a modified 619 from the apron. Back in the ring, Sabin gains control with a clothesline. Miguel rakes the eyes, then hits a running boot. Sabin fires back with a Superplex for two. Sabin avoids the Lightning Spiral, then locks in an STF submission. Miguel crawls to the bottom rope, forcing him to break the hold. Miguel goes for the Meteora but Sabin counters. Sabin has Miguel up for the Cradle Shock when out of nowhere, Zachary Wentz makes his shocking return and blindsides Sabin.

My Score: 3 out of 5

Match #2: Trinity def. Jai Vidal

The following is courtesy of impactwrestling.com:

Knockouts World Champion Deonna Purrazzo joins Tom Hannifan and Matthew Rehwoldt on commentary as she prepares to defend her title against Gisele Shaw on the Down Under Tour and Trinity at Slammiversary. The bell rings and Vidal quickly retreats to the outside. Trinity turns her back, allowing Vidal to attack her from behind. Vidal slaps Trinity in the face but she returns the favor just moments later. Shaw distracts the referee as Evans trips up Trinity from the outside. This allows Vidal to gain control by driving the back of her head into the apron. Trinity quickens the pace with a springboard kick for two. Trinity then spikes Vidal into the mat and locks in Star Struck to win by submission.

My Score: 3 out of 5

Match #3: Lio Rush def. Jack Price

The following is courtesy of impactwrestling.com:

Worldwide wrestling star Lio Rush makes his IMPACT debut against Jack Price! Rush puts his speed on display from the opening bell as he gains the early advantage. Rush knocks him off the apron, then dives through the ropes with a shot of adrenaline. Back in the ring, Rush soars with the Final Hour to win.

My Score: 1 out of 5

Match #4: Masha Slamovich def. KiLynn King

The following is courtesy of impactwrestling.com:

After coming to the aid of Killer Kelly last week, Masha Slamovich joins the fight against The Coven as she goes one-on-one with KiLynn King! The bell rings and King immediately goes on the attack. Slamovich quickly turns the tide as she pulls her down to the mat by her hair. Slamovich hits a running dropkick but King cuts her off mid-dive. King distracts the referee, allowing Wilde to attack Slamovich from the outside. King hits a big clothesline for two. Slamovich creates some much-needed separation with an explosive back suplex. Slamovich almost puts her away with a spinning heel kick. Slamovich dives through the ropes, colliding with King on the outside. Wilde throws King into the steel ring post when Killer Kelly appears on the ramp and neutralizes her with a steel chain. Slamovich hits the Snow Plow to win.

My Score: 3 out of 5

Match #5: Kenny King def. Yuya Uemura

The following is courtesy of impactwrestling.com:

Before the opening bell, Digital Media Champion Joe Hendry is in the production truck and tells producer Josh Mathews to wait for the signal. The match begins as Uemura has King reeling in the early going. King uses the referee as a shield, allowing him to deliver a cheap shot and gain control. Uemura counters the Royal Flush, then builds momentum with a series of strikes minutes later. Uemura hits a running bulldog out of the corner for two. Uemura counters a stalling suplex into a DDT and both men are down. King hits a pinpoint kick to the head, followed by the Royal Flush to win.

My Score: 3 out of 5

Final Verdict: 2.5/5

What’s that a solid three-star matches across the board apart from the debut of Lio Rush, which was technically an elongated squash match. So why only a 2,5 out of 5 overall? Because Impact did its typically stupid thing AGAIN and ended the show on an extended promo/talk segment. Which takes the win out of ANY shows sails immediately. As it did here! The return of Zachary Wentz is very welcome but that excitement felt overshadowed by Trinity being in the match that followed – she is very much over with the Impact crowd and her presentation ahs a LOT to do with that! But the most interesting thing, for me, was the teaming of Masha Slamovich and Killer Kelly who could, in all honesty, dominate the women’s tag division in no time.
