Will The Godfather Join Hollywood’s Long Remakes Queue?

While there are a few studios looking to buck the trend, the biggest production companies with the most mainstream continue on their trajectory of retreads being the priority. Prequels, live-action remakes, reboots, legacy sequels, and even “mid-quels” dominate the slate and, on paper, audiences are eating them up.

Box-office figures reveal that this run of original storytelling is working. Of the top ten highest-grossing films worldwide in 2025, we got a reboot, two live-action remakes – particularly awful ones, at that – and three entries into existing Hollywood IPs. The same is happening on TV, too. So, why not one of the most beloved films ever?

Prestigious and Continually Sought Out

The Godfather is held in a very special place in the entertainment industry. Despite breaking into the mainstream in the late 60s and early 70s, it continues to have a huge draw. Even the newest corners of the industry draw from its prestige. When you play casino games online, you’ll spot three official The Godfather slots.

Luckily, they’re not three different games based on each of the three films. All three primarily utilise the superb first entry from 1972. The Godfather, The Godfather Megaways, and The Godfather: 3 Pillars of Power immerse the player in the setting and story but infuse different slot mechanics to increase the broad appeal of the series.

Of course, the story of The Godfather originates from Mario Puzo’s 1969 novel of the same name. From there, the first film adaptation changed cinema and entrenched both Marlon Brando and Al Pacino as legends of the red carpet. The 1974 sequel was, arguably, even better. Even though the third marked a significant drop in quality when it landed in 1990, it’s still leagues ahead of the glut of the top ten films at the box office from last year. Beyond the novel, film trilogy, and slots trilogy, there hasn’t been much more from the IP in the mainstream or to continue to explore to this day.

A Making-Of Dramatisation to Lead the Way?

Modern Hollywood hasn’t exactly left The Godfather alone during this craze of retreading the old. In 2022, Paramount released the mini-series The Offer. It’s essentially a dramatisation of the story of getting The Godfather to the big screen. For fans of the movies, there’s a lot to like about the show.

The most memorable bits are when the characters fight their battles to get the film made as they saw it needed to be, which includes the monster run time for the age. However, it did collect mixed reviews at best, with the streaming platform wanting it stretched to ten near-hour-long episodes, which is certainly felt while viewing.

At the time, some saw this as a kind of teaser or way to test the waters for a potential The Godfather retread of some kind. Satirical takes on such a move have included casting Javier Bardem as Don Vito Corleone and Oscar Isaac as Michael Corleone. Even so, such vaunted casting might not even be required.
Given the figures coming from other such projects that have come to fruition, it seems that the name and a modern aesthetic are enough. Were The Godfather to be remade, it’d likely do incredibly well at the box office. While such a masterpiece shouldn’t be seen as being in need of a remake, there’s money to be made by doing so.
