‘Scott Pilgrim Takes Off: The Complete Limited Series’ Blu-ray Review

Comic book artist Bryan Lee O’Malley first introduced the world to Scott Pilgrim in 2004 with his hit graphic novel series. Six years later, the story made the leap to live-action with the cult-favourite film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, followed by the short animated spin-off Scott Pilgrim vs. the Animation. After that, the franchise went quiet for over a decade… until 2023.
That year, Netflix reunited with O’Malley to produce a brand-new animated series, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, bringing the characters back in a fresh and unexpected way. Now, in an equally surprising move, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment and Allied Vaughn have teamed up to bring Scott Pilgrim Takes Off: The Complete Series to Blu-ray, giving fans the chance to add the long-awaited return of the franchise to their physical media collection.
Based on the cult classic live-action film Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Scott Pilgrim returns in an 8-part animated series. The original film cast (including Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin and Anna Kendrick) reprise their roles in Scott Pilgrim Takes Off: The Complete Limited Series. Scott meets the girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers, but learns he must defeat her seven evil exes in order to date her. Then things get even more complicated.
This eight-episode series is absolutely out of this world fun. The anime-inspired animation is top-notch, and the voices are so familiar (understandably so). This is a super fast-paced little series. You will binge this series and finish it in no time flat.
All eight episodes of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off have been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p, presented in a 1.78:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is an English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. In terms of picture quality, these episodes are crystal clear. The colours pop right off the screen, and there are no digital artefacts or audio anomalies. In addition to great-looking episodes, there are also bonus commentaries by Creators and Executive Producers Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski.
It is so cool to see this Netflix series get a physical media release and I hope this is the beginning of more Netflix releases coming to Blu-ray. But only time will truly tell.
