After numerous buy-outs, mergers, etc., Warner Bros. now owns the DC Comics Universe. Owning the rights to some of the biggest superheroes in comics history opens the door to producing adventures with these characters. Lately, we have seen a plethora of movies and TV series, which Warner Bros. have been releasing on Blu-ray and 4K – series such as Titans, Pennyworth, The Penguin and The Sandman, just to name a few. Well, now here is a Blu-ray release I didn’t expect to see… Lucifer.

Bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, Lucifer Morningstar abandoned his throne and retired to the city of Angels, where he has teamed up with LAPD detective Chloe Decker to take down criminals. Charming, charismatic, and devilishly handsome, Lucifer has a way of manipulating people into confessing their deepest, darkest secrets, which helps Detective Decker deliver justice!

The comic Lucifer was created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth, and Mike Dringenberg. However, the Lucifer Morningstar we meet in this television adaptation differs significantly from his comic book counterpart. That isn’t a criticism. In fact, the reimagining works in the show’s favour. The playful good-cop/bad-cop dynamic becomes one of the series’ biggest strengths, elevated further by the undeniable chemistry between Tom Ellis and Lauren German. Add in consistently impressive special effects, and the show confidently blends crime procedural with supernatural drama.

The series ran for six seasons across two networks, beginning on Fox before finding a second life on Netflix. In total, 93 episodes were produced, just shy of the 100-episode milestone. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has now collected all 93 episodes on Blu-ray, spread across 22 discs. These episodes have been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and are presented in 1.78:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is an English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. Finally, there is the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

The quality of these transfers is extremely impressive. Colours are bright and vibrant, flesh tones look natural, and the image remains consistently crisp and clean throughout. The audio is equally strong, delivering clear dialogue and a well-balanced mix with no noticeable digital artefacts or sound anomalies across the Blu-ray set. In addition to the complete 93-episode run, Warner Bros. has included over three hours of bonus material in this substantial box set, adding even more value for fans looking to dive deeper into the series, including:

Special Features:

  • Lucifer 2015, 2016, and 2017 Comic Con Panels
  • Character Profiles
  • Featurettes
  • Deleted scenes
  • Gag reels

While comic purists will find this Lucifer to be an abomination in comparison to the source material, there is no denying that this series is devilishly fun and entertaining. And with all the bonus features, there is tons more entertainment than just the series here.

***** 5/5
