When you think of Myrna Loy and William Powell, most people immediately think of The Thin Man films – a series that the Warner Archive Collection has lovingly preserved for physical media fans with a complete Blu-ray set.
However, in 1940 right in the middle of the 6-film run of The Thin Man film series, MGM saw the chemistry between Loy and Powell and director W. S Van Dyke and decided to produce a screwball comedy together, entitled I Love You, Again. Now, for the 85th anniversary of this film’s theatrical release, Warner Archive have restored and released this film on Blu-ray.
In this wildly original tale, Mr. Powell plays a big-city confidence man who awakens from a nine-year amnesia to discover he has become the manager of a small town pottery works, joined by the Elks and married Miss Loy. Partnered in a phony oil scam, he continues the charade only to find Miss Loy’s about to divorce him for being such a fuddy-duddy! His problem: How to get the dough, avoid discovery and re-win the heart of his wife.
1940 seemed to be the year of the romantic comedy, particularly stories built around men pursuing former partners – a theme that also defined classics like His Girl Friday and The Philadelphia Story. I Love You, Again fits neatly into that tradition, boasting sharp pacing, a wonderfully witty script, and, of course, a terrific cast led by Myrna Loy and William Powell. The result is a breezy, endlessly charming screwball comedy that’s as fun now as it was then.
Warner Archive Collection have transferred I Love You, Again to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 1.37:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is an English DTS-HD MA 2.0 Mono, and there are English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
Warner Archive have done another outstanding job restoring this 85-year-old film to pristine-looking condition. There are no signs of dirt or debris, the picture is crisp and clean, and the audio is clear. But a wonderful-looking picture is not all this Blu-ray has going for it. Warner Archive added some nice bonus features, including:
Special Features:
- Lux Radio Theater broadcast with Myrna Loy and Cary Grant (6/30/1941)
- Fitzpatrick Travel Talks
- Cavalcade of San Francisco
- MGM Cartoon: The Milky Way
- Original Theatrical Trailer
The addition of the shorts and the cartoon is such a nice thing. But for me, I love the Lux Radio Theater Broadcast – sometimes we focus on the movies so much that we forget about the radio programs. These are such great forms of entertainment, nd I am so glad Warner Archive is working to let these live on for generations to come.
