‘The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – Seasons 1-3’ Blu-ray Review

by Jason Lockard

On Halloween Night 2010, the television world was forever changed with AMC’s debut of The Walking Dead. Fast forward 15 years and not only have we seen the original series, but many spinoffs, including Fear The Walking Dead, The Walking Dead: World Beyond and The Walking Dead: Dead City.

The Walking Dead TV Universe brought us many amazing characters, but one of my favourites was never seen in the original comics… Daryl Dixon. In 2023, AMC and AMC+ greenlit a Daryl Dixon series. Now, after 3 seasons, Acorn Media International have released all three in one Blu-ray collection.

  • Season 1: We follow Daryl as he washes ashore in France, navigating new threats and alliances while protecting a boy believed to be humanity’s last hope.
  • Season 2: We follow Daryl and Carol as they navigate the dangers of post-apocalyptic France, facing new enemies and challenges while trying to protect a child believed to be a messiah.
  • Season 3: Daryl and Carol navigate new challenges in Spain while trying to return home, facing various threats and deepening their bond.

The Daryl Dixon series starts off kind of slow. But the reason for that is they are building a foundation for this world Daryl has found himself in. For those who like their Walking Dead series fast and furious, this one isn’t quite it – but that doesn’t mean it isn’t enjoyable. Once the foundation is built, then comes the intrigue, action and heart. It is great to see Norman Reedus (Daryl) and Melissa McBride (Carol) together again… as it should be.

All three seasons are very short, only 6 episodes in season 1 and season 2; then 7 episodes in season 3. A total of 19 episodes. During Daryl’s character development, we have seen him grow a lot as a human, but here he grows even more. It is cool to see him being that zombie killer, but also a caregiver.

Acorn Media International have transferred these episodes to Blu-ray in 1080p and they are presented in a 2.00:1 aspect ratio. The audio tracks are a mix of English, French and Spanish language tracks in DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. There is also a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 Spanish track. Now there are options for subtitles in Season 1 in English and Spanish. In Season 2, subtitles are in English, French and Spanish. Then, in Season 3, there are English subtitles.

Acorn Media’s Blu-ray transfers are crisp and clean, with bright, vibrant colours and natural-looking skin tones throughout. There are no visible digital artefacts or audio anomalies on the discs, allowing the zombies to look as frightening as ever in high definition. Each season’s episodes are spread across two discs, and across this six-disc set you’ll find all 19 episodes alongside a selection of welcome bonus features, including:

Special Features:

  • Cast Diaries
  • Episode Insiders
  • Show Me More: The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon
  • Comic Con Panels 2024 and 2025

The Comic-Con panels are always a nice addition – many people don’t get to go to Comic-Con, but seeing these on the Blu-ray is like being there. I also enjoy the Cast Diaries, and seeing the actors’ thoughts while shooting this show. All these featurettes take this release from good to must-own!

***** 5/5

So, if you love The Walking Dead universe, Daryl Dixon is simply one of the best new spin-offs – head over to Amazon and order your copy of the Blu-ray now.
