88 Films continues to excel at delivering deluxe home-video editions of overlooked and under-appreciated films, with recent standouts including The Cat and SS Experiment Love Camp. Now the label turns its attention to another premium Blu-ray release, this time the 1989 action-adventure fantasy Saga of the Phoenix, directed by Ngai Choi Lam and Sze-Yu Lau.
The Holy Maiden of Hell, Ashura possesses immense power that can destroy humanity. Buddhist monks trap her in a deep cave to keep her from falling into evil hands. Kindhearted Abbot Jiku grants her wish to enjoy the human world for 7 days.
Saga of the Phoenix is pure 80s fantasy adventure. I’ve always had a soft spot for the genre, though I’ll admit I wasn’t entirely sure how much this one would land for me. Thankfully, it proved to be a genuinely pleasant surprise.
88 Films have transferred the film to Blu-ray in 1080p, presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is a remastered version of the original Cantonese Monoaural soundtrack. There is also the option for newly translated English subtitles. The transfer is taken from a brand new 2k restoration from the original camera negative.
As this was my first time watching the film, I don’t have a previous version to compare it to, but I can say without hesitation that it looks fantastic. Once again, 88 Films delivers on the presentation – and, as ever, they don’t stop there, rounding out the release with a solid selection of bonus features. Take a look at what’s included:
Special Features:
- Audio Commentary by Frank Djeng (NY Asian Film Festival) and F.J. Desanto
- Alternate Japanese Footage
- Image Gallery
- Original Trailer
Extras:
- Limited Edition Rigid Slip Case with New Artwork by Sean Longmore
- Limited Edition 40 Page Perfect Bound Book
- Limited Edition Premium Artcard
The film itself is thoroughly entertaining, the audio commentary is genuinely informative, and the inclusion of the artwork and booklet elevates the release from good to great. The only thing that would have made it even better for me would have been the inclusion of an English audio track.
