‘Splitsville’ Blu-ray Review

Stars: Kyle Marvin, Dakota Johnson, Michael Angelo Covino, Adria Arjona | Written by Michael Angelo Covino, Kyle Marvin | Directed by Michael Angelo Covino

Screwball comedies have been a staple of cinema since its earliest days. People have always gravitated toward stories that make them laugh; it’s an essential escape, a momentary lift that can brighten even the worst day. That timeless appeal is exactly why the genre continues to endure. Modern filmmakers still tap into that tradition, delivering new screwball comedies for today’s audiences – with results that can be hit or miss. In 2025, one of the latest entries, Splitsville, made its debut in US theatres. Now the film is making its way to Blu-ray, giving viewers a new chance to experience its offbeat charm.

Good-natured Carey (Kyle Marvin) runs to friends Julie (Dakota Johnson) and Paul (Michael Covino) after his wife Ashley (Adria Arjona) asks for a divorce. He’s shocked to learn the secret to their happiness is an open marriage.

The cast delivers solid work here, with each performance carrying more nuance than you might expect from a modern screwball comedy. The script, however, isn’t as tight as it could be, and the pacing wobbles throughout. There are definitely some genuinely funny moments, but a few jokes miss the mark along the way. As for the content, the film leans fully into its adult tone, featuring strong language, explicit sexual dialogue, nudity, and a handful of brawls, crashes, and chaotic set pieces. It’s worth knowing what you’re getting into before hitting play.

Splitsville has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in widescreen format in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. There are two audio tracks to choose from: an English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and an English Audio Description DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There are also subtitles in English SDH, French and Spanish. The Blu-ray transfer is a crisp and clean one, and the audio is clear. There are no signs of compression issues, no digital artefacts or audio anomalies. Also included on this Blu-ray set are some nice bonus features:

Special Features:

  • The Making of Splitsville
  • Trailer
  • Guilt and Normal (Promo spots)

A making-of featurette is nice, but it is a short one, only around 7 minutes long. For me, when I’m looking to add a Blu-ray to my collection, I enjoy a lot of bonus features – that is what sets Blu-rays apart from streaming services. Sadly, this Blu-ray is very skimpy on the bonus features, which is a shame.

***** 5/5

If you enjoy outrageous, off-the-wall, crazy, screwball comedies and don’t mind the [sometimes] graphic nature of R-rated films, then Spiltsville might be right up your alley. Head over to Amazon and order your copy today.
