‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit – Season 26’ Blu-ray Review

by Jason Lockard

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit stands as the flagship spin-off of the original Law & Order, shifting the focus to the dedicated detectives of the SVU as they take on some of the most sensitive, emotionally charged cases on television. Remarkably, the series is now deep into its 27th season, surpassing the original show’s impressive 25-season run.

With Season 27 underway, physical-media collectors have the perfect excuse to catch up. Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has brought Season 26 to Blu-ray in a robust 5-disc set—an ideal addition for longtime fans and completists looking to keep their shelves up to date.

The legendary series follows an elite squad of detectives in the Special Victims Unit of the New York City Police Department as they seek justice for victims of the most heinous crimes. Capt. Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) leads the unit, which includes Benson’s second-in-command, Sgt. Odafin “Fin” Tutuola (Ice T), Detective Joe Velasco (Octavio Pisano) and Detective Terry Bruno (Kevin Kane). Meanwhile, Assistant District Attorney Dominick “Sonny” Carisi (Peter Scanavino) fights for closure for the victims while dealing with the politics of the DA’s office. This season, the squad adds a new detective (Juliana Aiden Martinez) to their ranks.

Dick Wolf remains unmatched when it comes to crafting gripping TV crime dramas, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit continues to showcase his strengths. Mariska Hargitay delivers a commanding performance as Captain Benson, anchoring the series with empathy and authority, while Ice-T’s turn as Sergeant Odafin “Fin” Tutuola remains one of its most consistently compelling elements. Strong writing and striking cinematography keep the show feeling immediate and immersive, placing viewers right alongside the SVU detectives as they navigate each intense case.

All 22 episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit have been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and are presented in 1.78:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is an English Dolby Digital 5.1. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. The discs include the following episodes:

  • Disc 1: Fractured / Excavation / Divide and Conquer / Constricted / Economics of Shame
  • Disc 2: Rorschach / Tenfold / Cornered / First Light / Master Key
  • Disc 3: Deductible / Calculated / Extinguished / The Grid Plan / Undertow
  • Disc 4: Let Me Bring Pardon / Accomplice Liability / The Accuser / Play with Fire (Part 2)
  • Disc 5: Shock Collar / Aperture / Post-Rage

These episodes have been transferred to Blu-ray and are crisp and clean with no digital artefacts or compression issues. The audio is clean with no audio anomalies. Now, sadly, there are just the episodes included on this set. I wish there were some bonus interviews, gag reels or other bonus features. That would have taken a great Blu-ray release and made it that much better.

**** 4/5

If you enjoy Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and have been collecting this series, well, by all means, you need season 26. So, head over to Amazon and order your copy today.
