‘Coyotes’ Blu-ray Review

by Jason Lockard

Stars: Justin Long, Kate Bosworth, Katherine McNamara | Written and Directed by Colin Minahan

Writer/director Colin Minahan, best known for genre standouts like It Stains the Sand Red and What Keeps You Alive, returned in 2025 with something far more grounded with Coyotes, which trades supernatural shocks and creature-feature chaos for the kind of real-world terror that gets under your skin precisely because it could happen. And now, horror devotees – especially those who live for physical media – can celebrate: Coyotes is heading to Blu-ray. It’s a sharp, darkly comedic slice of survival horror that deserves a spot on any collector’s shelf.

Trapped in their Hollywood Hills home, a family fights for survival when caught between a raging wildfire and a pack of savage coyotes.

Coyotes isn’t aiming for pure horror, not even close. This is full-on comedy-horror, leaning hard into absurdity in the same spirit as Cocaine Bear. If that flavour of chaotic, knowingly silly genre filmmaking is your thing, you’ll absolutely find something to enjoy here.

The film’s biggest stumbling block is the CGI. Whether it’s budget limitations or some unfortunate AI-assisted work, the digital coyotes never quite convince, and it’s obvious they’re far from the real thing. It’s not outright terrible, but it’s definitely noticeable. What saves the film is the cast. Justin Long, Kate Bosworth, and the ensemble commit completely, playing everything with a straight face even as the world around them becomes increasingly ridiculous. That sincerity amid the chaos turns Coyotes into a breezy, knowingly bonkers entertainment.

Coyotes has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is an English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. As far as the film transfer goes, the picture quality is crisp and clean; there are no compression issues or audio anomalies. As for bonus features, there is just one: a featurette, “Meet the Pack” Behind the Scenes for the Makers. One of the major reasons to buy Blu-ray is for the bonus features. Sadly, there is not that much here!

In the end, Coyotes is a mixed bag. It is an off-the-wall, crazy creature feature that doesn’t try to take itself too seriously. That’s a plus, but the unconvincing visual effects really hinder this film in its believability (if you can say that about a comedy horror)!

***½  3.5/5

If you are into absurd, off-the-wall B-movies, the Blu-ray of Coyotes might just fit the bill. The film is released on Blu-ray and DVD on November 25th. Head over to Amazon and pre-order your copy now.
