If you’re a fan of low-budget horror, Cleopatra Entertainment is a name you should have on your radar. With Halloween fast approaching, the company has lined up a pair of spooky releases perfect for the season. The first was Fear Cabin: The Last Weekend of the Summer, a tense, late-summer frightfest. Now, they’re back with another dose of terror. And what says Halloween better than zombies? Just in time for your Halloween party, Cleopatra unleashes its latest DVD release: Mirror Life: Modern Zombies!

Shortly after, Tracy Kovalsky discovers that her cousin Jordan has gone missing after enrolling in an illegal study at a research facility for a miracle drug called Dumitor. Following an outbreak at the testing facility, Jordan and other patients are forced into lock-down. A life-and-death struggle for survival ensues as the patients are systematically hunted down while Tracy’s search for her cousin exposes the conspiracy to cover up the entire experiment – by any means necessary.

When you think about the zombie movie, it has been done to death (pun intended)! Just think about all of The Walking Dead shows. George A. Romero’s original films and remakes… We’ve seen funny zombies, Nazi zombies, Italian and Asian zombie movies, and even a zombie movie for kids. It can be a bit much!

Going into this film, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. It’s clear from the outset that this is a low-budget production, so don’t go in looking for A-list Hollywood names. That said, there are a few familiar faces in the mix – Courtney Cavanagh (George and Tammy), Kazy Tauginas (The Equalizer 2), and Victor Verhaeghe (Daredevil: Born Again). The relatively unknown cast actually works in the film’s favour, giving it a grounded, authentic vibe.

Now, this isn’t a Romero or Fulci-style zombie epic. It aims for that classic undead atmosphere but doesn’t quite reach those heights due to budget limitations. Still, for a Halloween get-together, Mirror Life: Modern Zombies makes for a fun, low-budget watch to throw on with friends and enjoy some goofy scares.

Mirror Life: Modern Zombies has been transferred to DVD in widescreen format. The audio track is an English Dolby Digital track, and there are English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. The film’s transfer is crisp and clean with no digital artefacts or audio anomalies; in addition there are some nice bonus features.

Special Features:

  • Director’s Audio Commentary
  • Trailer
  • Slideshow
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Outtakes

One of my favourite kinds of bonus features is outtakes and gag reels. I enjoy seeing the flubs and the crazy behind-the-scenes antics. So, this is a wonderful bonus feature to be included on this DVD. Also, the insight into the making of this film with the commentary is always a bonus.

So, if you are looking for a new zombie film and don’t mind the low-budget horror and even better, you revel in it. By all means, pick up a copy of Mirror Life: Modern Zombies on DVD; the disc is region-free!

*** 3/5
