Dekanalog brings cult oddity ‘The Demon’s Rook’ to Blu-ray this Halloween
Just in time for spooky season, Dekanalog is unleashing James Sizemore’s The Demon’s Rook on Blu-ray – a deliriously strange slice of DIY horror that’s been quietly building cult status since its debut.
Equal parts Lucio Fulci nightmare and ’80s creature feature fever dream, The Demon’s Rook follows Roscoe, a boy whisked away to another dimension by a benevolent demon named Dimwos. Years later, Roscoe (played by Sizemore himself) erupts back onto Earth as a messianic figure, but unfortunately, he’s not alone. Three malevolent demons tag along, wreaking havoc on campers, construction workers, and basically anyone in their path. Cue undead mayhem, psychedelic showdowns, and a blood-soaked battle for humanity’s survival led by a hipster raised in Hell and his childhood friend Eva.
Shot in Georgia with a mostly amateur cast and crew, The Demon’s Rook is a low-budget passion project that embraces surreal imagery, gruesome practical effects, and an anything-goes spirit. Sizemore and his team cram in enough throat-ripping, head-popping, and limb-shredding to rival films ten times the budget, while drenching everything in Argento-esque colour and fog.
The result? A gloriously weird, unapologetically indie horror-fantasy that plays like Return of the Living Dead by way of Jodorowsky. If you’re craving something off-kilter, bloody, and totally unclassifiable this Halloween, The Demon’s Rook Blu-ray might just be your new seasonal obsession.
