‘Bride Hard’ Blu-ray Review

by Jason Lockard

Stars: Rebel Wilson, Anna Camp, Stephen Dorff, Justin Hartley, Anna Chlumsky, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Sherry Cola, Gigi Zumbado, Michael O’Neill, Sam Huntington, Colleen Camp | Written by Shaina Steinberg | Directed by Simon West

When you think of mash-up movies, there are several films that come to mind: Little Shop of Horrors, From Dusk Till Dawn, Ghostbusters, Shaun of the Dead… Director Simon West, known for action films like Con Air, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, The Mechanic, and The Expendables 2, has now brought us his own mashup – mixing action and comedy in age-old tradition – with Bride Hard, which is not great, but it does have its moments. It was just not quite as entertaining as I had hoped for.

When a mercenary group takes a lavish wedding hostage, they have no idea what they are in for as the Maid of Honor is actually a secret agent ready to rain hell-fire upon anyone who would ruin her best friend’s wedding.

As the title suggests, you know what this mashup is going into this film. It is Bridesmaids meets Die Hard – which IS an interesting mashup idea. But somehow the film seems to miss the mark on the jokes. Rebel Wilson puts everything into her role, but for me the comedy for the most part just falls flat. It was cool however, seeing Justin Hartley. I remember his performance as Oliver Queen, aka Green Arrow, in one of my favourite DC Comics shows, Smallville!

Bride Hard has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in widescreen format in 1.78:1 aspect ratio. As for the audio options, there’s an English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and a 2.0. There is also the option for English Subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. Now, for most physical media fans, the best part of physical media is the bonus features. Well, I am sad to say this Blu-ray is, unfortunately, a bare bones release.

Bride Hard wasn’t really my cup of tea, but I’m sure fans of those over-the-top mashup films will see it as a must-have. If that’s your kind of thing, then by all means, enjoy.
