‘Baby It’s You’ Blu-ray Review (Fun City Editions)

by Jason Lockard

Stars: Rosanna Arquette, Vincent Spano, Tracy Pollan, Matthew Modine, Robert Downey Jr. | Written and Directed by John Sayles

You have probably heard the statement ‘You can’t help who you fall in love with’. Sometimes you just can’t help it! Even Elvis sang about this with his classic song ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love with You’. You probably heard ‘girls love the bad boys’. A lot of times, this is true. There have been many romantic films about those kinds of love stories.

In 1983, Academy Award-nominated screenwriter and director John Sayles Passion Fish (1992) and Lone Star (1996), helmed the romantic comedy-drama Baby It’s You. And now Fun City Editions, who have been releasing some great Blu-rays like Party Girl, Falling in Love, and Breaking Glass, have released Sayles’ rom-com, giving it its time to shine on Blu-ray!

Jill (Rosanna Arquette) is headed for college. Sheik’s a drop-out, headed for nowhere. They’re as different as day and night, but share a powerful bond: first love. ‘There’s the first one. There’s the right one. And there’s the one you never forget.’ Jill’s a drama major, headed for college. Sheik’s a drop-out, headed for nowhere. They’re as different as day and night, but they share a powerful bond: first love.

Baby It’s You is shot with such realism, you would think it’s a documentary more than a feature film. There are such great performances by the cast Rosanna Arquette (Desperately Seeking Susan), Vincent Spano (Over the Edge), Tracy Pollan (Bright Lights, Big City), Matthew Modine (Birdy) and Robert Downey Jr. (Zodiac). Then there is the music, which is such a tremendous addition to this film. I grew up on classic music of the 50s and 60s, so the soundtrack is amazing featuring music by The Supremes, Sam the Sham and The Pharaohs, The Righteous Brothers, Bruce Springsteen and Ole’ Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra.

Fun City Editions have transferred Baby It’s You to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio. This transfer is derived from a 4K scan of the 35mm Original Camera Negative. The audio track is an English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. This 4K scan brings real detail to this film. The picture is sharp, and the colours pop with natural skin. The audio is clean with clear dialogue and music. There are no digital artefacts or audio anomalies. Baby It’s You really looks gorgeous on Blu-ray. But this wonderful picture is not all that is included, Fun City Editions added some really cool bonus features too, including:

Special Features:

  • Audio commentary by Bill Ackerman
  • Image gallery
  • New video interviews with director John Sayles, producers Amy Robinson and Griffin Dunne, actors Rosanna Arquette, Vincent Spano and Matthew Modine
  • Double-sided wrap with legacy artwork
  • Booklet with new essays by Gavin Smith and Caroline Madden (first pressing only)

Baby It’s You has seen a Blu-ray release a few years ago from Olive Films (which is no longer in business). But that release had no bonus features and didn’t have the gorgeous transfer Fun City Editions can boast of. Plus, with the addition of an audio commentary, new interviews, great artwork and a collectable booklet. This Blu-ray release is really worth the upgrade.

***** 5/5

Baby It’s You is out now.
