How to Create the Perfect Staycation Experience

by James Smith

If you are ready for a holiday but want to stay close to home, the perfect solution to your holiday wishes is to have a staycation. They can be just as fun as a far-flung adventure without the headache of layovers and overstuffed suitcases. Perhaps your financial situation prevents you from going on holiday. Well, now is the time to make some plans in your hometown. Regardless of your reason for not going away, you can still have a wonderful experience at home by taking a staycation. Continue reading to learn more about how you can have fun wherever you are.

In Praise of Doing (Almost) Nothing

If you are busy, and you probably are very busy, you do not have any time left in your day to sit back and relax. Sometimes, taking a break is hard, especially if you tend to be an active person. In honour of your staycation goals, you need to learn how to take a break and avoid worrying about life outside of your staycation.

Start by playing an online pool game. It is easy to access as you can play right on your smartphone. And, online pool games are fun and relaxing. Work on your digital skills without moving too many muscles. After spending so much time on life’s responsibilities, this fun game allows you to take time to do nothing without any guilt whatsoever.

Pretend You are a Tourist

Staying at home is perfectly acceptable on a staycation, by the way. If you happen to live in an amazing area with a lot to see and do, you can save some money and avoid the logistics of arranging for someone to care for your dog or water your plants and collect the post. However, if you think there will be too much focus on home improvement projects or hoovering, or you want a change of venue, feel free to book a staycation at a local hotel. Perhaps a combination of the two will be the perfect fit for a local holiday.

Even if you have lived in your city for years and years, there might just be a few things you have never done before. Perhaps you have scoffed at the idea of engaging in something so touristy as hopping on the iconic red double-decker bus in London. Or maybe you work hard without any time to play and have never had the opportunity to explore until now. Take advantage of your city and time by looking up tourism options in your area online. Research local hot spots, tucked-away gems, and day trips from your city. You will be surprised by the fun you can have right at home.

Go Incommunicado

If you choose to stay local for your upcoming holiday, many people, from friends and family to coworkers and your boss may incorrectly assume that you are available for work check-ins, to pick up the slack for a sick co-worker, or to come over for a family dinner. Kindly inform everyone that you are taking your earned holiday days and will be unavailable.

It is unlikely that you need to tell your boss where you are going, but if they ask, the situation may become awkward. Be forthcoming without giving too many details. Inform them that your plans are fluid and you do not have a destination nailed down as of yet, but you fully intend to have your OOO (out of office) reply on and be unavailable so you can enjoy yourself without unnecessary interruptions.

As for any family that may want you to change a lightbulb or help with work in the garden, you need to carefully navigate those waters with tact and kindness. Take care not to lie about your staycation, as they will surely ask questions and want to see the highlights from your trip. Also, if you post online, your lack of destination is a sure giveaway that you are not far away. Be honest and share your need for relaxation after working so hard in your profession. Let them know you will check in when the staycation is over (and be sure you do). Of course, they should be encouraged to reach out in an emergency, just as they would if you were travelling in another country.

Take a Class

If your life keeps you inundated with work and family obligations with little time to pursue passion projects or hobbies, it is time to look at what you want to learn or do in life. Take a few moments of introspective contemplation. Think about something you have always wanted to learn or create.

Perhaps learning how to play a classic guitar riff or make a beautiful torte is on your bucket list. If so, look for a class in your area. You can find adult education classes for an abundance of activities, from knitting and crocheting to leather making and horseback riding. Find something that excites you and add that to your staycation itinerary. Who knows? Once your hometown holiday is over, you might continue learning to craft and create.

Treat Yourself

If you are the type of person who takes care of everyone else’s needs before your own, it is time to change that mindset. You deserve care, too. Give yourself some self-love by scheduling a well-deserved spa day at a local hotel or spa. Book everything on the menu or go à la carte and select only the options you truly will enjoy.

Take the time to relax and be in the moment with your spa experience. If you appreciate time alone, this will be perfect. However, if you would rather have a friend along for the day, go ahead and invite them. After all, if you were visiting another country and had a friend there, you would certainly meet up. Make the day special and treat yourself to relaxation.

Make your next holiday less stressful and more enjoyable by planning a staycation. The beauty of this type of travel is that you can do as much or as little as you like. The key is to relax, reset, and do the things you want to do.
