Back This! – Horror comedy ‘Marriage Bites’

by Phil Wheat

Welcome to the latest edition of our (semi) regular crowdfunding feature here on Nerdly – Back This! – where we take a look at some of the cool content taking the crowdfunding route on sites such as Indiegogo, Greenlit and Kickstarter. In this edition, we’re spotlighting a new horror comedy, Marriage Bites, which features a cast of familiar genre-film favourites!

What’s the film about?

Marriage Bites is a …”one-of-a-kind film that seamlessly combines elements of horror, comedy, and social media theories [Indiewrap]”. The film, written by Ashley Hargrove (Nashville, Fairwood, Unnerving) who also stars in the film as Linda – one half of the married couple at the centre of the film which follows Martin (Joe Komara; Falling for the Competition, A Perfect Christmas Pairing, A View to Kill For) and Linda (Hargrove) who, while rebuilding a stale marriage, face an unexpected challenge when Martin is bitten by a vampire, leading them to test various vampire theories and protect their town from the undead.

The film also stars a slew of genre actors including, Nicole Butler (Skate to Hell, Bar Rescue, Reloaded 2); YouTuber turned actor/director Shawn C. Phillips (Ghost Shark, Haunted High, Dead Ant); Darren Ewing (Troll 2, Cyst); Riley Wade Chase (Skate to Hell, Nightmares Unleashed); along with Grayson Thorne Kilpatrick, Daniel Emery Taylor, Wynn Reichert, Angela Russell Moore, Krishna Sistla Ward, J Spenser, Ava Connolly, Lena Sledge, Paul Bradford, Joseph Bodkin, and Jason Thomas.

What’s the crowdfunding for?

Making a horror film requires blood – and a lot of it! But, what about when it’s a vampire horror comedy? Marriage Bites is going to need a LOT of fangs, and multiple shirts to get bloodied. Of course, there are certain props – garlic strands, sunblock (yep!), a cross or two, and more. Plus some sfx creatures for vampires to “chomp” into, and even some stunts, so, hello stunt coordinator! Plus music, locations fees, crew and actors pay, plus travel expenses as many are coming from different states to film at Thunderdome Studios, Studio Huntsville, and locations between Atlanta and Georgia.

What are the rewards?

As with most crowdfunding campaigns, there are numerous levels to pledge funds at, including: social media shout-outs, thanks in the credits AND on IMDb, copies of the movie both digital and physical, screen-used props, signed scripts and posters, your face in the movie, plus the usual producing credits – producer, associate producer and executive producer and more!
