‘Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope’ Review (Nintendo Switch)
Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope is the sequel to the popular 2017 game, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, which was a surprise hit that combined the worlds of Mario and Rabbids in a strategy game. This time around, the game takes place in space and introduces new characters, new abilities, and new gameplay mechanics.
The game follows Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and their Rabbid counterparts as they explore various planets in search of Sparks, which are magical creatures that power the galaxy. The game’s story is light-hearted and humorous, with plenty of quirky dialogue and charming character interactions.
The gameplay in Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope is similar to the first game, but with a few key changes. Players control a team of three characters, each with their own unique abilities and weapons. The biggest change is to the level design – the levels are now less linear, and the turn-based tactical combat features a new system that disregards the first game’s grid-based layout but the game still maintain the familiarity of attacking enemies with ranged or melee attacks.
One of the first changes I noticed in Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope (and some might say it’s insignificant) is to “Team Jump,” which allows characters to jump on each other to reach higher ground or traverse obstacles – something that was available in the first game; however now you can chain said jumps and use all three of your team once per turn, or more later into the game. This adds a new extra layer of strategy to the game, as players must carefully position their characters to take advantage of this mechanic – which also now adds a floating mechanic too – AND it can often become necessary to utilise it at points in the game (unlike in Kingdom Battle) to get the upper hand on your opponents.
Another new mechanic in Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope is the ability to collect Sparks, which are scattered throughout each level. Collecting Sparks allows players to perform powerful special abilities, such as healing all characters on the team or dealing massive damage to enemies.
The game’s difficulty is well-balanced, with a gradual increase in challenge as players progress through the game. Boss battles are particularly engaging, with each boss requiring a different strategy to defeat.
The game’s visuals are stunning, with bright colours and detailed environments. The character designs are charming and capture the essence of both the Mario and Rabbids franchises. The game’s soundtrack is also excellent, with catchy tunes that add to the game’s overall charm.
One minor complaint about the game is that the camera can be a bit frustrating at times. While it generally does a good job of following the action, there are moments when it can be difficult to see what’s happening on the screen.
Overall, Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope is a worthy sequel to the original game. It introduces new mechanics, a new style of gameplay (that remains true to the franchise) and characters while retaining the charm and humour of the first game. The gameplay is engaging and well-balanced, with plenty of variety to keep players engaged throughout the game’s length. The game’s visuals and soundtrack are excellent, and the story is light-hearted and entertaining.
Fans of the first game or the Mario and Rabbids franchises in general should definitely check out Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope. The game is currently available on the Nintendo eShop for half price in the Super Mario Sale
