A Fitting Follow-up? Star Wars Jedi

by James Smith

After 45 years of a Star Wars-filled galaxy, not so far, far away, nor long ago, media creations stemming from the mind of George Lucas are still being churned out. Disney+ has seen multiple exclusive series with a modern, scoped approach to telling some of the characters’ stories.

In 2019, fans were treated to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order – a story-mode game finally deserving of its name, generated by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts. With the announcement of a second installment coming in 2023, we have a quick recap of all the best bits from the first game and what we might expect from the sequel.

Nostalgia and a Dream Come True

The first star wars film dates all the way back to 1977, so we might assume that the upcoming generation of gamers would never have been interested in playing a game based on such an old story. Luckily for Skywalker and the gang, ExpressVPN’s study reveals that the majority of gamers are far older than you’d expect. The assumption is often made that teens and youths are console-obsessed in society, but the golden oldies spend their free time on nostalgic games.

That essentially means that kids who were raised on the (now underwhelming) graphics of the first trilogy can delve into an all-singing, all-dancing playable version of the Star Wars universe. For fans (it’s not just me, right?), this was a dream come true, and we can expect only more nostalgia and epic gameplay that takes us right back to a Star Wars-oriented upbringing.

Saber Mechanics

Fallen Order followed a duo of Star Wars Battlefront games which, although displayed entertaining coop play, had pretty underwhelming lightsaber mechanics. Fortunately, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order stormed onto the gaming scene with some awesome saber action.

Not only could players onset multiple types of attacks with their saber, but progression within the game enabled saber customization, which eventually peaked at the point in which players unlock the Darth Maul-esque double-edged saber. We’ve all wondered how throwing about a real lightsaber would feel, and this is as good an experience as any other.

An Enthralling Story

Battlefront was cool, but the nature of the game meant that there was no real storyline or emotional connection to the game and characters beyond what was created in the films. This game saw the introduction of a novel character – Cal Kestis – a padawan who survived the onslaught that ensued in Revenge of the Sith. From the moment we meet him, we are offered a rich storyline that delves into his past, present, and future as a Jedi.

Losing his friend early on (spoilers!) creates an emotional attachment that has us rooting for him the whole way. There is also the introduction of a new set of villains: the inquisitors, powerful force users looking to eliminate the remaining Jedi. There are some epic showdowns with the boss villains, and we can’t wait to see how Star Wars Jedi: Survivors one-ups its predecessor.

The sequel has a lot to live up to after the first game’s success. If Respawn Entertainment has managed to keep doing what they did for the first game, though, we have no doubts that you’ll enjoy this one as much as we did the first – may the force be with you!
