‘AEW Dark: Elevation – Episode 80’ Review

by Phil Wheat

Welcome to this week’s review of AEW Dark: Elevation, the opening salvo in the AEW wrestling week. We’ve got the usual [new] commentary team, Excalibur and Matt Menard, for this episode so let’s see what the show has to offer!

Match #1: Marina Shafir and Nyla Rose def. JC Storm and Joelle Clift

My Thoughts: Marina Shafir and Nyla Rose make a great team and they look SO dominant in squash matches like this. But still we’ve opened with a squash match on Elevation. Again.

My Score: 1 out of 5

Match #2: Julia Hart def. Tiara James

My Thoughts: Another strong match for the former cheerleader turned [possible] leader of the House of Black. She squashed her enhancement talent opponent with ease.

My Score: 1 out of 5

Match #3: Dante Martin and Matt Sydal def. Zack Clayton and Serpentico

My Thoughts: What the actual f*ck?! Less than one minute for Martina and Sydal to demolish two men who should’ve given them SOME competition at least.

My Score: 1 out of 5

Match #4: Athena def. Emi Sakura

My Thoughts: Finally a match that was ACTUALLY a match and not another squash. This one got a decent amount of time to let both women beat the crap out of each other in their own inimitable style. I was just glad this wasn’t a squash TBH.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #5: House of Black (Brody King and Buddy Matthews) def. Isiah Prince and Kubes

My Thoughts: And we’re back to a squash match. Well, this was less of a squash match and more of the Hosue of Black DESTROYING their opponents. Hopefully Prince and Kubes weren’t that hurt!

My Score: 1 out of 5

Match #6: Hikaru Shida def. Christina Marie

My Thoughts: Ooooooh, not quite a squash as Christina Marie out up some offence against Shida. So we got a typical AEW quasi-squash instead of a complete squash. I can live with that.

My Score: 1.5 out of 5

Match #7: John Silver def. Ryan Nemeth

My Thoughts: The one time I actually WISH a match was a squash and it wasn’t. Damn it! As usual John Silver got the crowd going as only he, seemingly, can these days. Nemeth was his usual dull [arrogant] self.

My Score: 2 out of 5

Match #8: The Butcher and The Blade def. The Factory (Nick Comoroto and Aaron Solo)

My Thoughts: Nice to see The Butcher, The Blade AND The Bunny get a match after what feels like weeks of them not being on TV or YouTube. Shame it’s against The Factory, who need to spend LESS time on TV and YouTube! And yes, I can’t take Nick Comoroto seriously anymore with his Razor Ramon knock-off act!

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Final Verdict: 1.5/5

On the one hand this was a short, easy-to-digest show; on the other, that’s because it was full of squash matches. Sod it! These reviews are going to be as short as these matches going forward – no point putting effort in if AEW can’t be bothered! 80 episodes and this same shtick each and every week is becoming tiring.
