Great Alternative Activities for Gamers

by James Smith

Whether it’s Call of Duty or Animal Crossing, everyone loves gaming for a different reason. It might be because your older sibling showed it to you or because a game allows you to delve deeper into the worldbuilding of your favourite franchise. Of course, we all like games for a multitude of reasons, but nonetheless, it’s interesting to ponder what it is about the activity that piques your attention. With that in mind, there are a whole bunch of activities that you might enjoy outside of the gaming world, based on your primary reason for playing. So many, in fact that we made a list based on the most common elements associated with gaming…

Because it’s social – Board Game Cafes

Starting off with a popular reason for gaming, it’s social. For many people out there, it’s the closest community that they have. And while the social element of gaming is unique, it can be (sort of) replicated outside of the screen by heading over to a board game cafe. Sure, joining a book club or a sports team builds a sense of community too. But a board game cafe creates a very similar effect to online gaming when it comes to socialising: you’re all concentrating, competing, and enjoying the same niche while enjoying each other’s company at the same time.

Because it’s nostalgic – Card Games and Bingo

Of course, for many people their attachment to gaming is because of their emotional connection to it, whether that’s because they play with friends or that they were introduced to it by a loved one. If this sounds like you, then you might want to give card games or bingo a go, with the former existing in one form or another since 1000AD and the latter dating back to 1530. These are games that are tried and tested and have been passed down generation after generation. Now available in many places online, you can update your gameplay to the more modern version.

Because you love problem-solving – Escape Rooms

Do you find yourself gravitating to problem-solving games? Or is it even your favourite part of every game you play? If the answer to either of those questions is yes, then an in-person escape room might be a good bet as an alternative activity. Follow the clues, stay calm under pressure, and work well within a team; these are all skills that we can recognise from gaming. Additionally, you can find an escape room for pretty much every niche if that’s something that interests you.

Because it’s competitive – Trivia

And finally, if it’s your competitive streak that keeps you in gaming, why not attend a quiz or trivia night? Obviously, it’s all in good fun, but the whole point of a quiz night is to win alongside your team. It’s a pretty obvious choice for those of you who love the feeling of beating fellow players more than anything else. Furthermore, winning with a team can feel even better than solo, the glory intensified by the group atmosphere.
