by Guest

Welcome to the first in our new column 100 Word Hits, in association with comics retailer The Unreality Store, in which Matthew De Monti brings us short, sharp reviews of the latest books to hit comic stores over the past month or so!

Blood Stained Teeth #2

Written by Christian Ward | Art by Patric Reynolds | Published by Image Comics

Atticus Sloane has a big problem – he needs to dispose of all of the humans he’s turned into vampires (Sips) before the Brother Stoker and the First Born Council dispose of him. But where to start? The biggest, baddest, hardest Sip is where in the form of Duke Ellis the cage fighting Sip champion.

You see Atticus realises that in normal circumstances taking on Duke would mean certain death, but Sips aren’t as hard as First Borns and all Atticus needs to do is take a huge beating, let Duke tire himself out and then kill him.

This is brutal!

The Nice House On The Lake #9

Written by James Tynion IV | Art by Alvaro Martinez Bueno | Published by DC Black Label

Despite re-setting the minds of the residents in the house, the cracks are starting to appear in Walter’s plan and Norah, who Walter had trapped away from the main group, has at last found a way to communicate with them. Reg discovers that he seemingly can’t die and demonstrates this to his housemates, and Walter decides it’s time to reveal to Norah his reasonings for saving them all.

Tynion expertly keeps the reader guessing as to how this will conclude, and Martinez Bueno consistently provides some outstanding contrasting art styles month in month out. DC’s best book bar none.

Fables #151

Written by Bill Willingham | Art by Mark Buckingham | Published by DC Black Label

It’s been over seven years since we last saw the residents of Fabletown. Once a mainstay of DC’s Vertigo line it concluded with the oversized #150 and that was that. Well until someone decided that they should reunite Willingham & Buckingham for one last tale.

Sadly it’s been far too long for me to remember all the characters of Fabletown and what happened in their original 150 issues. Like your favourite band doing that one farewell tour too many, the choice to re-start the ‘fable’ seems misguided.

I liked Fables, but this is a swing and a miss for me.

Little Monsters #4

Written by Jeff Lemire | Art by Dustin Nguyen | Published by Image Comics

Whilst Billy, Ronnie, Raymond and the others feast on the human corpse, Romie tries to help his daughter make her way back to her human friends. Billy realises that there may be more human blood to drink and his group set out to find it. Disobeying orders given by the mysterious ‘adult’ vampire, they cross the city boundary and make contact with the humans. And at that moment the Little Monsters bare their teeth.

But the years of isolation in the city means they don’t expect their prey to fight back. They do, and with serious consequences. This is superb!
