‘AEW Dark: Elevation – Episode 63’ Review

by Phil Wheat

Welcome to this week’s review of AEW Dark: Elevation, we’ve got Paul Wight, Mark Henry, Tony Schiavone AND Anthony Ogogo on commentary (4 people! 4!) and another short and sweet 6-match card, so let’s get right into the action!

Match #1: Bear Bronson def. Brandon Cutler

My Thoughts: This was the usual Brandon Cutler match. A squash but one that saw Cutler up to his usual antics and comedy wrestling style. Unfortunately for Cutler Bear Bronson took this one a bit more seriously and got the quick win.

My Score: 1.5 out of 5

Match #2: Brody King def. Alex Reynolds

My Thoughts: Another quick squash match for Elevation as Brodie King. Well it wasn’t a TOTAL squash, with Reynolds at least getting some good offence in against the more powerful Brody King. And it was power that won the day here.

My Score: 1.5 out of 5

Match #3: Anna Jay and Yuka Sakazaki def. Emi Sakura and Nyla Rose

My Thoughts: Another women’s match featuring Anna Jay, Emi Sakura and Nyla Rose. This time we got the Magical Girl Yuka Sakazaki added to the mix to change things up a bit. This time round however the ending was a little muddied, with Rose accidentally hitting Sakura with a clothesline, which weakened the teams offence and gave Sakazaki the chance to pick up the win.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #4: Gunn Club and The Acclaimed def. Zack Clayton, Bryce Donovan, GKM and Lucas Chase

My Thoughts: I’m going to say it now. AEW are using The Acclaimed to try and get Gunn Club, sans Billy Gunn, over. The ass boys might have got a great win/loss record but nothing they do is memorable… So putting them with the company’s most memorable tag team MIGHT work. I just hope it doesn’t work the other way and this new “team” drags down The Acclaimed. Still a good way to cover up Bowens’ reported injury. For now.

My Score: 1 out of 5

Match #5: Dark Order’s 10 and Evil Uno def. Eric James and VSK

My Thoughts: As I said last week (I think it was last week, anyone else lost track of time in the past 2 years?), it’s clear 10 and Evil Uno now a tag team following Stu Grayson’s departure from the company. And it works. Uno does the fast-paced “speedball” style wrestling whilst 10 provides the power. And they’ve worked out the kinks in their flow by now too. THe pair made quick work of their opponents in this one… speaking of which, it’s great to see VSK on AEW programming again.

My Score: 1.5 out of 5

Match #6: ROH Women’s Title Match – Mercedes Martinez def. Trish Adora

My Thoughts: We got a bunch of squash (well, quasi-squash) matches this week which gave the marine event plenty of time to play out even in this smaller card. Nice to see a TITLE MATCH on one of AEW’s streaming shows rather than being kept for Dynamite or Rampage. I’m guessing having ROH titles fought for on Dark and Elevation will be how Tony Khan keeps the ROH story going until we get a weekly ROH show – which has to happen soon right? Maybe AFTER Double or Nothing, or perhaps All Out..? This was a great match and it’s even better that we got to see the Afropunk, Trish Adora, battle Martinez for the title – two women who, I think, could be pillars of the ROH women’s division under its new ownership.

My Score: 3 out of 5

Final Verdict: 3/5
