How to Watch Your Favorite Shows While Travelling

by James Smith

The last few years have been less about travelling and seeing the world and more about self-isolating and lockdowns. If you’ve had to postpone your plans to backpack through Asia or island-hop around Hawaii, you’re no doubt eager to start exploring once more.

With so much time spent at home, you may have become attached to your sofa and your boxsets. The thought of leaving behind these faithful companions that kept you going through many long and lonely months might understandably fill you with a sense of dread.

The good news is, you won’t have to. Read on for some helpful tips on how to watch your favourite shows when travelling.

Streaming Services

The availability of streaming services enables you to access many shows, documentaries and movies when on the go. From Netflix to Disney Plus, Amazon Prime to Hulu, you no longer need to miss the season finale of your favourite show or have to avoid spoilers. As long as you have access to the internet through a Wi-Fi connection and a device to watch your shows on, such as a tablet, laptop or smartphone, you’re good to go.

You can also watch these services through a smart TV. Just remember to bring your streaming devices, such as an Amazon Fire Stick or Roku box. Check out this streaming TV guide to compare the various streaming services out there.

Many streaming services also allow content to be downloaded, which means you can watch movies and shows straight from your device with or without an internet connection. This way, you can prepare a playlist of your favourite shows before you go, knowing you can access them whenever you want. This is useful for those times when you have to pass time waiting for your train or plane to arrive.

VPNs

After a long day of sightseeing, there’s nothing better than having an evening full of entertainment. Many travellers have found frustration at this point when they realize they can’t access their streaming service from a different location. This is known as geo-restriction which prevents users from accessing these sites in another country.

To resolve this problem, you will need a VPN, or a virtual private network, which will bypass the geo-restrictions allowing access to your content by hiding your location and replacing your IP address with a temporary one in the country of your choice. As a result, you can enjoy the same shows you did at home by streaming them anonymously.

DVDs

It may sound a little dated, but it’s worth dusting off your DVDs before you set off on your trip. Travelling can be a great time to catch up on these boxsets and finish ones that you started. If your laptop is fitted with a disk drive simply bring your DVDs along otherwise copy them onto a flash drive or your hard drive to watch at leisure.

As you already have your content with you, this can be a great idea for more remote trips where internet access will be limited or unreliable.
With the suggestions in this article, you can stay tuned to all of your favourite shows when travelling.
