‘AEW: Rampage’ Review (April 1st 2022)
It’s Monday morning, so you know what that means… it’s time for our review of Friday night’s episode of AEW: Rampage, which this week competed with Ring of Honor’s Supercard of Honor… Yes, AEW and ROH owner Tony Khan was his OWN competition this week! Crazy! Let’s get into the review!
Match #1: The Young Bucks def. Top Flight
My Thoughts: What’s not to love about a match that sees one of the greatest tag teams of their generation take on a tag team who will definitely become the greatest tag team of THEIR generation. It’s like booking an instant classic. Seriously. Both teams were in perfect synchronicity, each pair working fluidly together and with the other team. People criticise “spot-fest wrestlers” like both of these teams but when it’s done right it looks superb. Like this match.
My Score: 4 out of 5
Match #2: House of Black def. Fuego Del Sol, Stu Grayson & Evil Uno
My Thoughts: This was basically House of Black beating the crap out of Fuego Del Sol for three-quarters of the match and Evil Uno and Stu Grayson for the remainder. A glorified squash match that kept the House of Black on their dominant streak. It will be interesting to see if and when anyone gets the better of Malakai Black and co.
My Score: 2 out of 5
Match #3: Owen Hart Women’s Tournament Qualifier – Jaime Hayter def. Sky Blue
My Thoughts: Britt Baker stays away from AEW and Jaime Hayter gets a chance to sign. And she takes it. As did Skye Blue in the match, with both women making most of this opportunity and showing just how good they are. Skye Blue looks to be getting more and more comfortable in an AEW ring and Hayet gave her enough room to make a decent impact even in losing.
My Score: 3 out of 5
Match #4: Keith Lee def. Powerhouse Hobbs
My Thoughts: As I said with the last match, with Hayter getting the best out of Sky Blue, Keith Lee brought out the best in Powerhouse Hobbs in this one. Both men are powerhouses, never mind just Hobbs, and they were brilliantly matched – with Hobbs clearly looking the BEST he ever has in AEW and that’s a credit to him… and to Lee. This was also one time that interference helped the match by keeping this feud going – and I’m here for it!
My Score: 3 out of 5
Final Verdict: 4/5
As I said in the opener, Tony Khan was competing with himself this past Friday and that really brought out the best in AEW: Rampage. Plus we got some great variety in the matches with every division given a chance to shine. And is anyone else really loving the Hook/Danhausen stuff? Only two interactions and I want to see the pair keep doing this forever!
