Romford Horror Festival 2022 – Nerdly’s pick for Best Actress

by Kevin Haldon

As you may know Nerdly, the website, and our fledgling – but growing – YouTube channel are proudly latched on to the Romford Film Festival. I have loved working on the panels and having discussions about what we should and shouldn’t show, what should be nominated and what should win. However, I and my esteemed judges don’t always agree and sometimes you can see your favourite falling down the list. It’s not to say you were wrong to champion the flick just that something else just shone that little bit brighter, this my friends is the true magic of cinema.

I’ve already brought you my choices of Nerdly’s pick for the Best Feature Film. The thought process is that, honestly, I have a terrible memory and can’t actually remember what won what. I am going to go through some of the categories and give you what I think should take the coveted Rommy for that category. With Best Feature done I fancied moving on to BEST ACTRESS.

Nominees:

  • Jalena Stupljanin (Moon Drops)
  • Pat Garrett (Wyvern Hill)
  • Marie Clara Cushinan (Changeling)
  • Ximena Vera (You Will Never Be Back)
  • Nadia Alexander (Cutter)
  • Samantha Anderson (Off the Hook)

This category is a strange one, with a fairly mixed bag in terms of performances. Easily one of the stronger categories and as I remember it was one that caused a fair bit of debate but when I really weighed up the options there was one leading lady that just pipped it… More on that in a minute but first I want to highlight some of the work by these actresses.

Big shout out to Jalena from Moon Drops and Ximena of You will Never be Back, these women had very little dialogue in their respective roles meaning they had to use all the tools in their extensive arsenal, which can often lead to very powerful performances and boy did they deliver!

While Wyvern Hill wasn’t my favourite feature of the fest you cannot doubt the commitment Pat Garrett gave to this role, she really went for it. For my money young Nadia Alexander from Cutter was superb, I don’t know if it was the subject matter but she portrayed this ultra layered and poignant of the moment role that is truly the stuff of parent’s nightmares. I will say she was somewhat let down by the actress playing her mother who was I my opinion slightly overegging the omelette.

Alexander brought a real sense of horror and anxiety, leaving me as a viewer fearing where this short was heading and the only thing I really knew was that it was that I didn’t want to go there. That’s why Alexander would be my, and Nerdly’s official Romford Horror Film Festival pick.

So that’s my pick, Nadia Alexander for Cutter. However, was she the choice of the collective? Well you will find out soon enough people!

I will be back shortly with another Nerdly Romford Horror pick so keep ’em peeled.
